Lead actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has already promised in several interviews that “Black Adam” will be a real DC spectacle, and most of the select audience who have already seen the film are also very impressed. The main thing tweeted were the numerous action scenes, which are supposed to work “like a shot of adrenaline”. But “Black Adam” apparently has more to offer…
That’s why “Black Adam” had to be re-edited four times
As producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia revealed in an interview with Collider, “Black Adam” was initially too bold to get a PG-13 age rating (i.e. from age 13) from the US MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) authority. It took four cutting roundsto agree a harmless version with the MPAA, the American counterpart of the German FSK (Voluntary Self-Regulation of the Film Industry).
An R rating for Black Adam would have meant that children under 17 could only see the film if accompanied by an adult – and of course the target audience shrinks as a result. However, the reason for an R rating isn’t just violence, but intense action, nudity, and too much profanity.
But according to Flynn and Garcia, the PG-13 version now in theaters has it all. “One of the things ‘Black Adam’ is known for is its aggression and violence. Making a movie without those ingredients just wouldn’t have been authentic,” Garcia said. It was very much based on the comics that were loved by fans.
These “Black Adam” scenes didn’t make the final cut
And what scenes are Garcia and Flynn talking about? About several recordings in which Johnson kills his enemies with “brutal force”. In the first draft, there were ten moments in the film that were extremely violent. About half remained. Flynn talks about trucks driving over corpses and opponents being killed in a jet motorcycle chase.
Which scenes can be found in the cinema and which cannot be found on October 20, 2022. After that, “Black Adam” will be shown in German cinemas. In Germany, the film is released from the age of 12.
There’s also good news for those who would have been happy with an R rating: Flynn and Garcia can imagine a home cinema release will include the missing brutal scenes. However, there is no exact information about this yet.
