If you think sugar is only found in desserts, you are wrong. Whether in fruit juice, baked bread or tomato sauce; There is sugar in everything. It often hides behind names such as maltose, dextrose, maltodextrin or molasses.
Sugar is not inherently bad. The body needs it to provide energy, for example, to keep the brain functioning. “Our brain needs sugar, otherwise it will stop working. But of course you don’t necessarily need granulated sugar!” explains Stéphanie Bieler, expert at the Swiss Nutrition Society.
As is often the case, the problem lies in quantity. We consume too much sugar. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that a maximum of 10 percent of your daily energy needs be met by sugar. It will be around 50 grams with 2000 calories. For comparison: One bottle of Coca-Cola (45 cl) already contains 48 grams of sugar. According to the Swiss Nutrition Report, each person consumes an average of 130 grams of sugar per day.
Sugar is very harmful
Doctors warn against excessive sugar consumption. The results are very diverse. Too much sugar will damage your teeth and make you fat. This is because the body creates fat reserves when it receives more energy than it needs. Sweet drinks, in particular, are sugar traps and can lead to overweight or obesity. Excessive consumption of beverages such as Coca-Cola can also lead to diabetes.
The cardiovascular system can also be damaged if there is too much sugar in the body. According to a study, high sugar consumption increases the risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases by 38 percent. Test subjects got 16 to 21 percent of their daily energy needs from sugar.
A study published in the journal Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience concluded that sugar reduces the brain’s ability to cope with stress and bad memories. Brain changes associated with high-sugar diets appear to be similar to those that occur when exposed to abuse and stressful situations early in life.
How do I stay away from sugar?
All reasons to think twice about grabbing a Mars bar during your break. So how can you best avoid the sweet temptation that seems to be present in every meal? The answer is as simple as it is obvious: The easiest thing is probably to avoid sweet drinks. But cooking on your own and using fresh ingredients will also help you consume less sugar.
Bieler advises: “Look closely! If you prepare food yourself (e.g. desserts, pastries, etc.) you know exactly how much sugar you use in the kitchen. Read the ingredient lists for (semi-)finished products and get an overview.” You should also generally consume sugary foods in moderation. For example, cake is not suitable as a snack. But that doesn’t mean it’s wrong to eat dessert once in a while. (lum)
