Today on TV: a science fiction thriller as if you were drunk – with a fascinating story, beautiful images and two mega stars

Albert Einstein reportedly once said that people use only ten percent of their brain’s true potential. Whether the Nobel laureate actually said this or whether the quote – as several sources claim – was simply stuffed into his mouth by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard to further his own agenda is really beside the point. What is certain is that each of us is mentally capable of doing more, at least in theory.

‘The Illusionist’ director Neil Burger shows us how the full exploitation of our cognitive abilities, for example with the help of nootropics, could end in his fast-paced, glossy thriller ‘Without Limit’. It stars Bradley Cooper, star of “Hangover” and “Silver Lining,” screen legend Robert De Niro (“GoodFellas,” “Heat”) and Abbie Cornish (“Jack Ryan”).

“Without Limit” will be broadcast today, November 28, 2023 at 8:15 PM on Tele 5. There will be a repeat that same evening at 2:20 am. Online retailers such as Amazon also offer the thriller as Blu-ray, DVD or paid video-on-demand:

This is the story of “Unlimited”

Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) lives in New York City and is a writer – or at least he wants to be one. Because he has been working on his first book for years, he has hardly made any progress. Moreover, his girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) has now left him. So times can really be better when he meets Vernon (Johnny Whitworth), the brother of his ex-wife Melissa (Anna Friel).

He gives Eddie a sample of the experimental drug NZT-48. Taking such a tablet puts the human brain into overdrive within moments, meaning that every little bit of information and memory can be retrieved and processed completely without loss. Eddie is enthusiastic about the effects of the drug and immediately orders more.

When Vernon is found shot dead in his apartment a short time later, this initially has no effect on Eddie’s cheerfulness. He knows where his ex-brother-in-law hid his stash. With his help, he completed his novel in four days, learned several foreign languages at the same time, and was also extremely successful on the stock market.

Almost overnight, Eddie is now extremely wealthy, adored by beautiful women, and becomes a literary star and best friend of mega-financial mogul Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro). However, he soon begins to experience the first side effects and Vernon’s killers are now closing in on him…

“Without Limit” – fast and entertaining

Despite a promising, fascinating sci-fi premise, the thematic underpinnings of ‘Without Limit’ may not be the most solid. The FILMSTARTS review, which awarded three out of a possible five stars, calls the film a fast-paced and always entertaining thriller that comes across as exciting and sometimes even hyperactive.

Our author Christian Horn especially praises the visual and directorial merits of the film. With fast-paced sections and a nervously pulsating score by Paul Leonard-Morgan (“Dredd”), the rapid realization of the protagonist’s intoxicating experience is intensified. Lead cameraman Jo Willems (“The Hunger Games 2-4”) makes breathtaking visual journeys through the American metropolis of New York City to bring the immersive experience for the audience to a climax that is occasionally reminiscent of Google Street View in glossy format.

“Without Limit” is based on the novel by American author Alan Glynn, called “Stoff” in the German translation (original English title: “The Dark Fields”). The adaptation, written by Leslie Dixon (“The Thomas Crown Affair”), earned its $27 million budget within its first week of theatrical release in North America alone. A global film hit, ‘Without Limit’ generated a total of more than 161.8 million for the studio at the worldwide box office. Of course, there is also significant income from streaming and haptic home cinema formats.

Due to the great success of ‘Without Limit’, rumors of a sequel spread quickly. However, in 2013 it was announced that a TV series would be produced instead. When ‘Limitless’ arrived on American television two years later, Bradley Cooper served as producer, returning to his original role as Eddie Morra in a total of four of the 22 episodes. However, the leading roles were played by Cooper’s “American Sniper” co-star Jake McDorman, “Dexter” fan favorite Jennifer Carpenter, Hill Harper (“CSI: New York”) and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (“Scarface”, “Abyss”).
