My definition of “cosy”: A cup of cinnamon tea, biscuits and a warm room. Sports is not one of them.
But the latest TikTok trend shows that sport and comfort don’t have to be mutually exclusive. American influencer Hope Zuckerbrow (25) has already inspired more than a million users with her “Relaxed Cardio” concept. Concept: Combine endurance sports with enjoyable activities.
So what exactly does this mean? Personally, I tried the following:
- 30 minute walk wrapped in a huge scarf, Christmas tea in hand
- 45-minute low-impact workouts on a yoga mat
- 40 minutes jogging (so you can easily carry on a conversation)
So does this help? Fitness instructor Lucile Lecocq says: “Anything that gets people to move more slowly, more slowly, and more without risking injury is a good idea.” Depending on its type, the environment where sports are performed is much more enjoyable with Cozy Cardio. The gym is not for everyone.
Jérôme Spring, project manager in Unisanté’s health promotion and prevention department, confirms: “The word ‘sport’ can evoke unpleasant memories for some people. They associate exercise with pain, shortness of breath and sweating.” Cozy Cardio offers a safe space, especially for introverts, where they can be physically active.
“It is important to understand that physical activity does not have to exhaust or even destroy us,” says Lucile Lecocq.
However, the important thing in a comfortable cardio is: regularity. Jérome Spring points out the ritualization of exercise: “A pleasant environment in which to exercise can encourage commitment and the creation of habits.” In this way, sports become a part of daily life in a comfortable and stress-free way.
Incorporate relaxed cardio
Casual cardio can also lead to disappointment for some because the usual post-workout responses such as sweating and exhaustion are missing. Lucile Lecocq says: “Relaxed cardio is a good first step in developing healthy habits and routines. For a sedentary person, a daily walk can have huge benefits for physical and mental health.” The method can then be supplemented with regular, light cardio training, gradually increasing the intensity of the sport without pressure and stress.
Pressure-free and stress-free exercise is the main concern of the inventor of Cozy Cardio. “Society puts a lot of pressure on us to look a certain way, so physical activity becomes a form of punishment,” says Hope Zuckerbrow. So the sole purpose of exercise is to burn calories. Comfortable Cardio changes this view.
