Purists often say this when it comes to remakes of great classics or even . It is certainly doubtful whether a remake of the western classic ‘The Magnificent Seven’ was really urgently needed. However, there is no doubt that this was allowed to be made – if only because the original itself was a remake. In 1960, director John Sturges (“Broken Chains”) delivered a reinterpretation of the Japanese historical film “The Seven Samurai” that was transferred to North America.
The 2016 version of “The Magnificent Seven” runs today, November 26, 2023 at 8:15 PM on RTL 2. However, because the film is shortened by more than three minutes at broadcast time due to the FSK rating for 16 years and older, we recommend that you watch the film elsewhere. As an alternative to the TV broadcast, you can stream the western actioner with a Paramount+ subscription. It is also available as (4K/UltraHD) Blu-ray, DVD or paid video-on-demand:

Leading the top-notch cast is director Antoine Fuqua’s frequent collaborator and Oscar winner Denzel Washington (Training Day). He is joined by three Marvel stars, among others – most notably Chris Pratt, who takes on the second lead role. The “Guardians Of The Galaxy” superstar clearly had a lot of fun playing the drunk with heart.
The duo is joined by Ethan Hawke of “Moon Knight” and Vincent D’Onofrio, who previously played Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in “Daredevil” and “Hawkeye.” On January 10, 2024, the long-awaited miniseries ‘Echo’ by Marvel fans will launch on Disney+, in which the New Yorker will revive his original role.
“The Magnificent Seven” on RTL 2: that is the story
1879: The prairie town of Rose Creek is firmly in the hands of ruthless businessman Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), who exploits the adjacent gold mines. The few residents who have not yet been murdered or displaced, pool their last savings in great desperation, led by the young widow Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett). They hire seven men to free them from the tyrant forever.
US Marshal Sam Chisolm (Washington) is the leader of the mercenary force. The wildly motley crew also includes explosives expert Josh Farraday (Pratt), Mexican outlaw Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), strictly religious tracker Jack Horne (D’Onofrio) and former Confederate army sniper Goodnight Robicheaux (Hawke). Harvest (Martin Sensmeier), a renegade Comanche warrior, and the assassin Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee) from Korea, who prefers to work with knives.

Washington & Star-Lord instead of Cruise & Freeman
When it was first leaked in 2012 that Hollywood studio MGM was working on a remake of the classic ‘The Magnificent Seven’, Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon were named as part of the cast. However, there was no candidate for the production at that time.
“The Magnificent Seven” (1960) on Amazon Prime Video*
Two years later, a completely different cast was assembled and Antoine Fuqua was signed as director. Fuqua has been fond of the subject since his childhood, when he would regularly watch genre landmarks like “My Big Friend Shane” or “The Black Falcon” on TV with his grandmother. With his version, he not only wanted to stay true to the atmosphere and intentions of the two role models, but he also tried, in his own words, to make the film in a way that his grandmother would have liked.
Unfortunately, we’ll never know if Grandma Fuqua would have enjoyed “The Magnificent Seven.” Despite some minor written shortcomings, our reviewer Carsten Baumgardt liked the film so much that he gave it a good 3.5 out of a possible 5 stars in the FILMSTARTS review and gave one in his conclusion to call to action.
