Hazel Brugger reveals: Motherhood has changed her so much

There is a lot going on with comedienne Hazel Brugger at the moment: at ProSieben she wants to steal the show from Joko Winterscheidt and is celebrating her premiere as a voice actress in the new Disney film “Wish”, which opens on November 30 in Switzerland and Germany. Here in the German version she lends her voice to Dahlia, who in turn is the best friend of main character Asha. There are even one or two vocal appearances from her.

Moreover, Hazel Brugger is pregnant for the second time. Last year she took some time off because she had reached her limit, she explained on Twitter. Now she’s back.

In an interview with Watson, she opens up about her role as a mother – and reveals that things got awkward at times in the dubbing studio.

Hazel, you can even be heard singing in a few scenes from ‘Wish’. Did you have any inhibitions while recording in the studio?
Hazel Brugger:
Yeah right! In the end, I think I was most surprised that the result turned out well. I love it when the same person who voices a character also does the singing. Because it’s Dahlia who sings in the movie. I had to jump over my shadow, but looking back, it was cool to leave my comfort zone.

Have there been other projects in the past where you were afraid of embarrassing yourself? In “Who Steals the Show?” the danger is relatively great…
Honestly, I watched it and asked myself, why wasn’t I more scared at the time of the shot? I think it’s a fundamental fear that people have of looking like an idiot. No one wants people to think, how can you be so stupid? When it comes to a knowledge show, the hole you can fall into is very deep. And in “Who steals the show?” A fairly broad level of knowledge is required.

Hazel Brugger poses at the "Wish"-Premieres alongside Patricia Meeden, who plays the character Asha.

How do you explain that you weren’t too nervous?
I just try to put fun first in every project I’m involved in. You don’t need this pressure, it just makes everything harder and worse. Once the recording starts, you can’t prepare for anything anyway. You have to work with what you have at the moment. A table is then made from three table legs without a table top.

You said at the premiere of “Wish” that the speaking role fulfilled a childhood dream for you. Why did it take you so long to start your career as a voice actress?
Compared to people who still don’t have a speaking role at the age of 100, it didn’t take that long. But I didn’t force it either, so I didn’t apply persistently. The most beautiful things that happen in life are often just a happy coincidence. I was asked by Disney and I really liked the role, it was a very positive experience. I don’t even know if it would have been better if I had insisted.

There’s a worse way to get into this business than with a Disney movie.
There’s virtually nothing that can top this… and that’s a bit sad. It’s the only negative thing I can say about this job. The climax has been reached. Now I have to figure out how to spend my retirement.

Did you also meet Helene Fischer during the production, who narrates the opening credits of “Wish”?
Unfortunately not! That would have been very nice, because she is now also a mother. I could definitely give her tips – for example about pumping on tour. Then it comes down to which backstage refrigerators are best at keeping breast milk fresh. By the way, that would also be a great idea for a format. I just don’t know if the world is ready for it.

You will definitely show “Wish” to your children later. But how would you react if they couldn’t do anything with Disney?
Then I would say: which children? No seriously: my children are of course allowed to have their own opinions. However, the situation would be strange because I don’t know any kids who don’t like Disney. My daughter only wants to brush her teeth with her Elsa toothbrush. “Frozen” certainly saved our oral flora.

How much fun is pregnancy or motherhood in general for you? Does this role also inspire you in your work?
In any case, one thing is certain: I didn’t find it very funny to keep getting kicked in the stomach in the dubbing studio.

I’m sorry, what?
Some recordings even had to be repeated because there were small steps in the kidneys. I don’t know exactly how this child will turn out, but I will enroll him in martial arts as a precaution.

And furthermore: how are you as a mother?
Otherwise, motherhood is like anything in life that is honest and raw: a mix of extremely unfunny and the funniest thing in the world. My daughter and I have a joke where I play pan flute music and then pretend to play the pan flute on her toes. I could do this all day, but there always comes a point where my daughter doesn’t feel like doing it anymore. I never thought I could get so much pleasure from something so simple.

Last year you took some time off because you weren’t feeling well. Have you now found a good balance between work and private life?
Yes Yes. I think I’m a bit kinder to myself now, I try not to be so hard on myself and not expect as much from myself as I used to. Everyone is usually not that strict with you, and you often misjudge that. Therefore, try to look at yourself from the perspective of, for example, your best friend. If you treated yourself the way you treat your best friend, life would be much more enjoyable.
