“Shame!” Demonstrators in Bellinzona shouted: Nearly 6 thousand people followed the call of unions and left-wing parties to protest wage cuts on Wednesday evening.

The demonstration started at the train station around 17:00 and progressed towards the government building. Here, demonstrators chanted slogans against the canton’s planned austerity measures, the Keystone-SDA news agency’s correspondent on the ground said.

The demonstration was organized by unions, including VPOD, and supported by the Pension Defense Association and the Movement for Socialism. The purpose of the demonstration was to condemn the wage cuts announced by the Ticino government as part of the 2024 budget, which have not yet been approved by the parliament.

A wage cut of around 2 percent is planned for canton employees. Additionally, the cost of living adjustment should not be adjusted based on the cost of living.

The austerity measures proposed by the canton affect all state employees, i.e. employees of schools, universities, hospitals, cantonal clinics, health and social services as well as social education.
