Every book is a door to versatile learning and development, all the more reason to encourage reading at an early age in boys and girls.

For some parents, this task can be complicated, due to time or other reasons, but following some tips, cultivating the habit in the little ones at home can be easier.

The Panama Book Chamber (Capali) has collected ideas to encourage reading at an early age, below we will tell you what they are.

– Let them see you read: Setting an example is very important and in this way the boy or girl will learn by imitation.

– In the house, you should create a space where reading is encouraged, a place where there are books and where a boy or girl feels comfortable reading.

– Respect their interests: Let them choose the book they want to read, it should be in accordance with their age and what you want to instill in them.’

Reading together can be very useful for a boy or a girl, it can be before going to bed, it will create a bond with the book and with you.

Reading time should be fun, not a punishment or a chore.

That way, the little ones will be involved in the process.

– A fun moment: Reading offers a wide range of possibilities, it will depend a lot on the parents whether they will create a positive relationship around him, that is, that reading is not a punishment or an obligation.

It is recommended that reading be a fun moment for a boy or a girl.

– Read together: In some cases it is difficult to find time for this, however, in order for a boy or girl to develop a love for reading, it must be done regularly.

A good time to read can be before bed, it will encourage a bond with books and with you, mom or dad.

On the other hand, the school environment also plays an important role. In Panama, for example, to promote reading, there is a program “Let’s all learn to read” (Atal), present in official schools, which encourages boys and girls to read through various activities.

This program not only tries to encourage students to read, but also nurtures their talent, agility of thought, good diction and ability to work in a team.

“Reading helps them function better, and the most important thing is that while reading they understand that stories are a great advantage for them because they share experiences with their colleagues,” said teacher Rosa Álvarez during the celebration of the program activity in the school region of central Panama.
