The Irish government is taking alcohol prevention a step further following its decision to introduce stricter warnings on the labels of alcoholic drinks such as beer and wine. Stricter advertising rules for alcoholic drinks on radio and television will apply in Ireland from 10 January 2025, the Irish Independent magazine recently reported.
Alcohol commercials are no longer allowed to appear on television before 9pm. The new rules for radio advertising are even stricter: from midnight to ten in the morning, and then from three in the afternoon to midnight. Radio advertising for alcoholic beverages is therefore only allowed between 10am and 3pm, i.e. for five hours.
Advertising restrictions for the benefit of children
According to Irish Minister of Health Stephen Donnelly (47), the newly introduced measures are primarily aimed at preventing children. Approximately 50,000 children and young people start consuming alcohol in Ireland every year. Donnelly said current alcohol advertising encourages this and therefore should be restricted.
There are also advertising restrictions on alcoholic beverages in Switzerland. For spirits such as whiskey, vodka or gin, only product-related ads are allowed. Likewise, there is no discount for alcoholic beverages or drinks containing alcoholic beverages in Switzerland. Wine and beer are not affected by these advertising regulations.
