Panamanian writers strive to ‘break down stereotypes’

This weekend, Panama closed its participation as a guest country in the 42nd edition of the International Book Fair of Santiago (FILSA), an event where the isthmus sought to position some of its most recognized authors and “break down stereotypes”.

Panamanian writers Consuelo Tomás, Damaris Serrano and Marixa Lasso represented Panama at the fair held from November 10 to 19 at the Estación Mapocho Cultural Center, one of the most important in Chile.

“We are the center of the world, but at the same time we are a very unknown and distorted country, about which a lot is said stereotypes“, Serrano assured EFE, a few minutes before the presentation of his book “Panama, accounts of a nation in the diaspora”.

Highlander, Literary criticismessayist and professor at Wright State University (United States), said that Panama’s participation in literary events because it allows “to demystify that image that it is a small country devoted only to commerce and which has left literature and culture aside.”

The Panama Canal, one of the the most spectacular works from modern engineering and through which 5% of world tradeis precisely the common thread of the book “Deleted: The Untold Story of the Panama Canal”from historians Marixa Lasso and recently published in Spanish.

“The book talks about how history of the tropics and how we have to write another one beyond stereotypes,” Lasso, who also spoke of the balance historians must strike to maintain “academic rigor and try to achieve at the same time public More spacious”.

At the Panama stand, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Panama, with which EFE maintains cooperation in promotion Panamanian cultural heritageand the Embassy of Panama in Chile, musical presentations of the singer-songwriter were also held Karl Lamboglia and works available from national awards such as Ricardo Miro, Carlos Francisco Changmarin and Gustavo Batista.

“The relationship between Panama and Chile is a fruitful long-term relationship. In 2005, Chile was a country invited to International Book Fair in Panama“, said Eduardo Castillo, president of the Chilean Book Chamber.
