An MCU movie isn’t an MCU movie without one or two (more or less) surprise guest appearances. The biggest surprise in this context is undoubtedly the comeback of “The Marvels” – spoiler alert! – X-Men member Beast (Kelsey Grammer) in the mid-credits scene, which we already covered in detail in a separate article:
But a cameo from the MCU itself (sadly ruined in the film’s final trailer) also makes for some exciting speculation in the actual film, though not necessarily about the larger universe, but rather about the development of two characters. This refers to the appearance of Thor’s old companion and new Asgard ruler Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), who stops by to help her friend Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and give the Skrulls who have fled the devastated planet Tarnax a new to give. housing supply. But how did this cosmic visit come about?
“We Just Had to Write Her a Cameo”
“Pairing Carol with Valkyrie and seeing them together on the big screen was another item on my wish list.”“The Marvels” producer Mary Livanos explained in an interview with the decision to have Valkyrie appear in the Captain Marvel sequel. “There are a lot of fans of them and their friendship and as a huge nerd, I really wanted to see their relationship on screen.”
The fact that director Nia DaCosta is also a close friend of Valkyrie actress Tessa Thompson, who starred in her 2018 feature directorial debut “Little Woods,” was an additional reason why they simply had to write a cameo for the character. .
Romance for Captain Marvel and Valkyrie?
But are Carol and Valkyrie really just a friendship or is there more? In ‘The Marvels’ it usually comes as a surprise that the two characters suddenly become friends. While they have indeed worked together many times in the comics, in the MCU they have only been briefly seen side by side in the battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin) in “Avengers: Endgame.”
The fact that they subsequently became friends happened off-screen. And more could have happened to her. That they have a more intimate relationship is certainly hinted at in the aforementioned “The Marvels” scene. The two are very cordial with each other (Valkyrie even has her own nickname for Captain Marvel: Marv), holding hands and followed by a tender kiss on the cheek as a farewell.

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean a romance, but there has been speculation for a while that Carol and Valkyrie could become a couple. The latter has already loudly announced in ‘Thor 4: Love And Thunder’ that she has yet to find her queen next to her at the head of New Asgard. And Captain Marvel, who has not yet been given a love story in the MCU (not always), would certainly be a suitable candidate here – which is now further fueled by the loving meeting between the two (the friends Brie Larson and Tessa Thompson also seemed to be there not to be averse to it in previous interviews.
Whether Marvel will actually expand this relationship in this way remains to be seen. But the foundation for this could now be laid.
