Have you ever wondered why you moan during sex or why it feels good when your partner does it? “Together with the endorphins released by the brain during sex, moaning sounds can increase arousal and intensify the feeling of pleasure,” says Melina Dobroka (37), a sexologist who runs her own practice in Basel.

The vibrations of the vocal cords create pleasant vibrations in the body and activate the vagus nerve, which has a relaxing effect. The vagus nerve is responsible for reducing stress in the body, among other things. It passes through the neck, extends to the ears, and extends to the chest and abdominal organs.

Moaning as a means of impressing your partner

Moaning not only has a positive effect on a physical level, Dobroka says, but it can also promote intimacy and create a connection with the other person. “You can use moaning sounds to indicate to your partner whether you particularly like a touch or a position,” says Dobroka. Moaning is a type of communication that can be used specifically in bed. Research shows that moaning is not always a signal of passion or pleasure.

For example, British scientists from the University of Central Lancashire and the University of Leeds found that many women quietly enjoy their own orgasms and moan loudly only when they want to make their partners climax faster and end sex. Reasons cited by respondents were fatigue, fatigue or lack of time. Many women in the survey also said that the purpose of moaning is to strengthen a man’s self-confidence.

For some people, touch is more arousing than the sound of moaning.

Does quiet sex equal bad sex?

Dobroka says there’s nothing negative about using moaning sounds specifically to bring your partner to orgasm or make them feel good. “For many people, this is a tool through which they and their sexual partners can increase their arousal.” If someone doesn’t moan in bed, that doesn’t necessarily mean the sex is bad. “Sounds may not be a source of arousal for this person and may even find moaning inhibiting.”

In sexology, sources of arousal are the ways in which a person becomes sexually aroused through the senses. In addition to moaning, this includes visual impressions, touches, smells, fantasies or tastes. “How you are physically aroused and how you express your desire is highly individual,” says Dobroka. According to the expert, the most important thing is to always respect your partner’s boundaries and wishes. “No one should feel pressured to make noise if they feel uncomfortable during sex.”

Advert

Some sexologists think that women moan more often than men during sex and even talk about a “moan gap,” a gender difference when it comes to moaning. “I think this is a stereotype that comes from the porn industry,” says Dobroka. The depictions of a woman screaming loudly and a man making noise only at the climax are unrealistic. Whether someone moans in bed and how often they moan depends on the person, not the gender, according to an expert.
