Do you really need “WandaVision” and “Ms. Marvel” before “The Marvels”?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow – and no longer just on the big screen, but with series on the small screen as well. The latter are now also more closely linked to the cinema adventures, either by sending already well-known characters to new adventures or by introducing new characters that will later find their way into the films, such as the two colleagues of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in the film. latest MCU movie “The Marvels”.

But do you really need to be familiar with anything even remotely related to The Marvels to understand and enjoy the movie? Let’s clarify this once.

A must-see: “Captain Marvel”

Even though the 33rd MCU film is called ‘The Marvels’ and focuses not only on Carol Danvers, but also on a whole trio of superheroes, it is still a direct sequel to ‘Captain Marvel’. Year 2019. And you should have at least seen it before I attended a screening of the sequel. Here we are not only introduced to the title heroine and her origin story for the first time, but we are also introduced to the complex conflict between the Skrulls and Kree, which again becomes very important in ‘The Marvels’ and where Carol makes a very special connection. .

Moreover, not only does the friendship between Carol and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) begin here, it also lays the emotional foundation for Carol’s relationship with her best friend Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) and her daughter Monica, who appears in “The Marvels” is now an adult and meets her beloved ‘aunt’ again after many years.

After “Captain Marvel,” Carol had other appearances in the MCU (in “Avengers: Endgame” and an end credits scene in “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings”), but they are not before her return in “ The Miracles.” Really relevant. We would even go so far as to say: that “Captain Marvel” is actually the only one of the many MCU adventures that you should definitely have seen before “The Marvels”. The experience is also enriched by two other things…

Nice bonus: “WandaVision” & “Ms. Marvel”

As mentioned at the beginning, Captain Marvel has two other heroines at his side in “The Marvels”: the aforementioned Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and the teenage Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). However, they are not making their MCU debut here, but have previously appeared in two series from the comic book universe.

Monica Rambeau was part of the supporting cast of characters in the first real (and highly watchable) MCU series ‘WandaVision,’ where she first gained her supernatural powers when she entered the sitcom dream world of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth OIsen ) entered. After the loss of her great love, Vision suffered from serious trauma. Kamala Khan, on the other hand, has “Ms. Marvel” will even get her own series in 2022, in which we got to know her and her family better.

Knowledge of both series obviously cannot hurt the “The Marvels” experience in order to have a stronger connection with these two characters, especially in the case of Kamala. While Monica plays only a supporting role in ‘WandaVision’ (and, apart from the story about the painful loss of her mother with cancer, remains rather pale), ‘Ms. Marvel” is all about Kamala.

And even though the series lags behind, it’s certainly a pleasure to spend even more time with the lively Captain Marvel fan, who is also an absolute scene-stealer in ‘The Marvels’ (especially since at the end of it we the series also finds out that she is actually a mutant and can therefore use her powers without a magical bracelet).

The way the two characters appear in “The Marvels” allows you to have fun with them even without this prior knowledge. Kamala in particular is once again presented elegantly and in the style of her series and with her superhero enthusiasm she can even inspire viewers who have not yet seen the Disney+ production. For a basic understanding of “The Marvels,” “WandaVision,” and “Ms. Marvel” isn’t really important, so we’d classify it as a nice but not absolutely necessary addition.

Omit entirely: “Secret Invasion”

And what about the MCU series ‘Secret Invasion’, which on paper is actually very closely tied to the events of ‘Captain Marvel’ (and therefore essentially ‘The Marvels’)? Here we see how, decades after his first contact with the Skrulls, Nick Fury has still failed to find a new home for the aliens around his friend Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), while a splinter group of shape-shifting aliens have long since infiltrated humanity .

To make it short: You can safely ignore “Secret Invasion”. Not only because the series has wasted more and more of its potential as it has progressed, but also because the events of “The Marvels” play no role at all, despite their purported significance. Nick Fury’s surprisingly revealed Skrull wife, who he actually took to the SABER space station at the end of the series, doesn’t appear at all. It is therefore also conceivable that ‘Secret Invasion’ will only take place after ‘The Marvels’ (there are no official statements about this yet). But in that case, there would obviously be no need to quickly watch the six episodes before buying a ticket for ‘The Marvels’.
