LIMS (Laser Ablation Ionization Mass Spectrometry) will be used in the chemical examination of lunar rocks.

The mass spectrometer, called LIMS (Laser Ablation Ionization Mass Spectrometer), is flying to the Earth’s satellite as part of a project of the American space agency NASA.

Landing in the Moon’s south polar region will allow LIMS to make stable in situ measurements. According to the researchers, this region is of particular interest because it contains some elements whose isotopes make it possible to determine the age of the material.

The university was involved in NASA’s Apollo lunar mission with its solar wind sail in the 1960s. When Buzz Aldrin became the second man to exit the lunar module on July 21, 1969, the first thing he did, the university said, was unfurl his Bernese solar wind sail and stick it into the lunar soil.
