Bad news for “Barbie 2”? The Netflix reboot of a huge fantasy saga is coming sooner than expected

Even before new editions of the hit franchises ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’ were announced, Netflix announced that they were also working on a new adaptation of a popular young adult fantasy saga: ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’. again by the streaming service in the form of several films and possibly series. However, things remained quiet around the mammoth project for a long time – until a real coup for the director position took place in the summer of 2023, which accelerated the whole thing again.

As the “Barbie” hype train slowly gathered pace, but before it was clear what a megahit the film would truly be, became director Greta Gerwig tasked with directing two new ‘Narnia’ films. Especially after the resounding success of “Barbie”, after which the creator of “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” can hardly save himself from offers, the question was how soon the reboot of “Narnia” could start – especially since Even after more concrete announcements Netflix likes to take longer with such complex projects (see, for example, the ‘One Piece’ or ‘Avatar’ live-action series).

But apparently ‘Narnia’ will actually be Greta Gerwig’s next project, so everything could happen sooner than initially thought. At least that’s what Netflix film boss Scott Stuber says in an interview with the website to understand that we are currently working hard to put the plans into practice. Filming is scheduled to begin in 2024, so the first new ‘Narnia’ film could potentially hit Netflix as early as 2025.

Conversely, this could mean that all fans of “Barbie” would have to wait longer for the inevitable (though still unofficially announced) sequel. At worst, it could even lead to a sequel being made without Greta Gerwig. However, a sequel to ‘Barbie’ without Greta Gerwig seems very unlikely, after all, the filmmaker is the mother of plastic success.

Will the entire ‘Narnia’ saga be made into a movie this time?

What happens from there and whether fans of “Chronicles of Narnia” will see adaptations of all seven parts of CS Lewis’ original this time around, following the first attempt following the disappointing box office results of the third film in 2010 (“The Chronicles of Narnia”) Narnia: “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”) was stopped early, then it certainly depends heavily on the number of views of the reboot on the streaming service.

However, overall it remains to be seen how exactly Gerwig and Netflix will rewrite the popular story about the magical realm of the same name, in which mainly children from the real world experience dangerous adventures. Given Gerwig’s previous work, it can be assumed that the filmmaker will pay more attention to the female characters.
