The ‘Friends’ creators wanted to break up Chandler and Monica – but Matthew Perry just prevented that!

In addition to the turbulent on-off relationship of Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Ross (David Schwimmer), Monica (Courtney Cox) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) are seen in the cult sitcom ‘Friends’ as more of a down-to-earth couple who, despite some difficulties , stays together until the end. However, their love story almost faltered because the show’s creators wanted to write a storyline into the sitcom that could have changed everything.

This is how Chandler was originally going to cheat on his true love, Monica, when she meets her ex-lover Richard (Tom Sellek) for lunch and the couple begins to argue about it. At least that is what actress Lisa Cash recently revealed in an interview who was cast in the role of Chandler’s affair at the time.

Matthew Perry believed ‘Friends’ fans would never have forgiven Chandler for the misstep

Like the actress in interview explained that she would play a hotel worker in Las Vegas who brings something to Chandler’s room: “I got a guest role and was very happy. The scene was where Chandler and Monica argued in Las Vegas about Monica meeting Richard for dinner. The script called for Chandler to go to the hotel room and order room service, and I, as the hotel employee, brought it to him. We start talking and laughing and getting along, and eventually Chandler cheats on Monica with my character.

The storyline is said to have already been all set and was only finally completed a day before filming Matthew Perry personally preventedAs Lisa Cash continued, “We had rehearsed and everything. The day before we were to film in front of a live audience, I was told that Perry went to the writers and told them that the audience would never forgive Chandler if he cheated on Monica. And he was probably right! That could have completely changed the course of the series and that of his character.”

Instead, Lisa Cash’s role was eliminated from the series and Monica and Chandler’s story continued as we see it today in the legendary ten seasons of “Friends.” Cash was eventually brought back to the sitcom for another role, playing a flight attendant who meets Ross and Rachel in the episode “The One In Vegas: Part 1”. Cash also spoke highly of her co-star Matthew Perry, who tragically passed away on October 28 this year at the age of 54.
