The corona epidemic has everyone talking about hand hygiene: Washing hands frequently and thoroughly with soap is one of the most important measures against the spread of the virus. Corona has also created a high demand for disinfectants, as people need to disinfect their hands several times a day.
Use these tips to stay healthy in winter
The number of flu cases in Switzerland is increasing every week. Whether it’s from family members or co-workers, there’s more coughing and sneezing happening again in Switzerland right now. What should you do to prevent infecting me in the first place? The rules are the same as for protection against coronavirus. Cough and sneeze into a tissue or the fold of your arm, wash your hands thoroughly and ventilate them several times a day.
As children, we learned that when you cough and sneeze, you cover your mouth with your hand. This is a sign of good behavior and prevents expelled infection droplets from spreading too far into the air. Unfortunately, we shed large amounts of germs on our hands. If we soon greet others with a handshake or touch doorknobs or trolley handles, we diligently spread germs. What is supposed to reduce infection through airborne droplets increases the risk of transmission from hands. However, there is a very effective preventive measure at this point: Washing your hands regularly.
Cold water is not enough
Proper washing plays a big role, explains John Messmer of Pennsylvania State University. The expert recommends that for it to be effective, hands should be rubbed well and washed with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds.
However, a quick rinse with cold water will not help. Although soap cannot kill bacteria, it helps wash away germs. They often bind to skin oils and cannot be removed with water alone as the oil is known to be insoluble in water. Pathogens dissolve only when combined with soap. If, in addition to washing your hands, you strengthen your immune system with a vitamin-rich diet and regular walks in the fresh air, you have a high chance of enjoying the winter without coughing or feeling cold.
Don’t exaggerate!
Washing your hands regularly and thoroughly is highly recommended, but it should not become an obsession with hygiene. The rule of washing your hands five times a day is completely sufficient. Experts say that ordinary soap is sufficient when washing, and there is no need for antibacterial soaps or special disinfectants in daily life. It is especially important during childhood that our immune system learns to distinguish between good and harmful bacteria, and this would not work in a completely germ-free environment. Therefore, children should not live in a sterile home but instead learn the correct level of hygiene. This includes washing your hands thoroughly before eating and, of course, after using the toilet.
