Beat Wüthrich, master butcher in Münchenbuchsee BE and owner of Wüthrich Metzg, says everyone was in tears at the end when Ariane Aeschlimann was able to join her family and butcher shop team after the award ceremony as European champion and was greeted with hugs. . She had previously performed brilliantly in a two-and-a-half-day competition in five disciplines, beating five competitors, two women and three men. The 24-year-old player, a member of the SwissSkills National Team, can now call himself the best butcher in Europe. “It was very impressive that the entire Metzg team came,” says Aeschlimann.

Boss Beat Wüthrich actually invited all nine employees to EuroSkills in Poland in early September, and no one turned down the trip. “Supporting our teammate Ariane in the final was a unique opportunity and simply amazing,” he says.

More applications for apprenticeships

Wüthrich cannot say whether the successful employee now attracts more customers to the store and whether sales have increased thanks to the European Championship title. But the 33-year-old master butcher sees two tangible positive effects. First, team bonding increased tremendously the entire time; especially thanks to the shared trip and experience of celebrating victory with a colleague. Second, interest in trial apprenticeships and in-company apprenticeships has increased.

This is the main concern of the young butcher shop owner; consciously focuses on education. Currently, they have two students in their first year of education and one in their second year. “It is important that we educate young people ourselves, especially at a time when it is so difficult to find experts,” he says. That’s why it’s so important for young professionals to continue their journey and gain experience after completing their apprenticeships. He believes that some will return to Wüthrich Metzg in Münchenbuchsee because of the favorable study environment and study environment.

Ariane Aeschlismann and her boss defeated Wüthrich in the Metzg department store.

Ariane Aeschlimann contributed to this with her motivated work and success in EuroSkills. «If anyone in the company wants to participate in such professional championships, I recommend that every boss supports him. “It takes some effort, but you get a lot in return.”

“Concentrated and focused”

Wüthrich and his team had to make a special effort for their ambitious colleagues. He trained rigorously for EuroSkills for a year. Not only every Wednesday, on his day off, but also repeatedly at meetings of the professional national team. This was usually on Friday and Saturday, the two most important business days in a butcher shop, when orders, in-store sales and catering events accumulate. “This meant additional organizational effort, that’s clear,” says boss Wüthrich. «But everyone saw how concentrated, focused and motivated Ariane was. “This mood has spread to the team.”

But things didn’t stop at Münchenbuchsee during the team’s three-day trip to Poland. No, Beat Wüthrich’s 67-year-old father Fritz temporarily assumed the role of former boss and took charge of the store together with a team of former employees. “Some of them hadn’t worked in this profession for 14 years; it was as if they had never left,” says Beat Wüthrich. This was also an extraordinary event for Metzg staff as well as customers.

Already in further education

Aeschlimann is not resting after the championship. He began training to become a meat industry manager. This would allow him to one day take over his family’s business. They also run a butcher shop just a few kilometers away in Uettligen.
