It would probably take watching “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” a dozen times to find all the references to the Spider-Man story hidden in the background.
One of the best cameos is definitely the appearance of Donald Glover as Prowler, who is held captive in the Spider-versions’ headquarters as a live-action version of the supervillain. Many of you will certainly know the actor from the sitcom ‘Community’, where he and Danny Pudi form the sympathetic duo Troy & Abet, which fans have embraced not only because of their sympathetic morning show. Glover’s self-created series ‘Atlanta’ has generated a lot of enthusiasm in recent years.
The actor is also active as rapper Childish Gambino. He caused a stir in 2018 with his highly political smash hit ‘This Is America’. We recorded the song for you here:
MCU fans should already know Donald Glover!
But MCU fans should also know Donald Glover very well, because in “Spider-Man: HomecomingWe could see the charismatic actor and musician in a brief appearance as Aaron Davis – and as we all know, that’s the real name of the supervillain Prowler.

Donald Glover also mentions his cousin Miles Morales here. In a conversation with Spider-Man, he says that he doesn’t want any weapons in this neighborhood because his nephew lives there. In a deleted scene, we can even overhear a phone conversation between Aaron and Miles. Here the gangster, tied to his car with spider webs, apologizes to his cousin for not making it in time. What the two wanted to meet for is not revealed.
We re-recorded the scene for you here:
Will we see Donald Glover in a Spider-Man movie again?
We had “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” producer Amy Pascal in an interview and asked her about a possible Donald Glover comeback in one of the future Spider-Man movie projects – and even if she didn’t answer the question specifically wanted to answer, her answer shows that she is as excited about the cast as the author of these lines:
“Unfortunately I can’t answer your question, but we all love Donald Glover. He fits the role so perfectly and is just amazing.”
You can read the entire interview here:
In any case, it does not seem unlikely that we will see Donald Glover again in a future Spider-Man film, for example in the already announced fourth big screen adventure of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man (which unfortunately we have to wait even longer for). now than originally assumed) – after all, we already know from their meeting in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ that Peter Parker and Aaron Davis live in the same neighborhood.
However, it’s also entirely possible that we could see Donald Glover again in a possible live-action Miles Morales movie. Opposite the industry magazine Amy Pascal has now confirmed that a corresponding film is in the works. And who would be a better antagonist than crowd favorite Donald Glover?
What do the editors of FILMSTARTS say about “Across The Spider-Verse”?
Even apart from Donald Glover’s cameo, “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” is an all-round successful film – even in the opinion of large parts of the FILMSTARTS editorial team.
If you want a closer look at just how in love we really are with “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse,” we recommend the edition of our Canvas Love podcast embedded here. Here FILMSTARTS editors Björn and Stefan, together with presenter Sebastian, are enthusiastic about Sony’s animation hit.
