Disney Plus relies on a subscription model with ads

Disney is introducing a new subscription option with advertising for its streaming platform.

In addition to the two existing subscriptions, Disney Plus will introduce a cheaper model from November 1. This costs 7.90 francs per month, which is five francs cheaper than the standard subscription. The catch: everyone who takes out this subscription has to watch commercials.

Commercials are played before a film or during a series; films must be able to be watched without interruption. The spots should be between 10 and 30 seconds long, although there are rare cases where the commercial lasts up to a minute. A maximum of two commercials may be played consecutively. Within an hour, users see about four minutes of ads.

“Today’s launch marks a major milestone for Disney+ in Switzerland and Germany, now offering customers complete flexibility to choose the subscription model that suits their needs and budget,” the press release said. We work with advertising partners in Switzerland and Germany.

Apart from the advertising, the only other difference from the standard subscription is that it is not possible to download content and watch it offline. The subscription with advertising can only be paid in monthly installments, while other subscriptions can be paid annually.

Netflix also announced that it would introduce a discounted subscription with advertising from November 3 – initially only in twelve countries, not including Switzerland. It is not yet known when this subscription (which will cost just under 5 francs in Germany) will also be available in Switzerland.
