Although “Constantine” fell slightly short of expectations at the box office, the comedy film adaptation starring Keanu Reeves (“John Wick: Chapter 4”) gained more and more cult status in the following years. Although the action-packed fantasy horror continued to gain fame, fans had to wait a whopping 17 (!) years before it was finally officially confirmed that ‘Constantine 2’ was coming at the end of 2020.
Keanu Reeves returns in the eponymous lead role, director Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games” franchise) and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman. However, there have been no real updates on “Constantine 2” lately, which was/is mainly due to the Hollywood strikes. In any case, Lawrence has now explained that the sequel goes one step further in terms of violence and horror (via ):
“’Constanijn 2′ was delayed by the strike. We also had to overcome a number of hurdles to regain control of the character. We are in control. Keanu, Akiva and I have already been sitting in meetings thinking about what we want the story to be – and there will be more meetings. The script needs to be written. But we really hope we can make ‘Constantine 2’ a true R-rated version.”
Will “Constantine 2” be more difficult than its predecessor?
The “R-rated version” refers to the “R” rating commonly used in the United States, which is assigned to films that use more than one serious sexuality-related swear word or words in a sexual context. When it comes to violence, nudity, and drug use, this rating (compared to the next lower rating PG-13) can also be significantly more intense. Young people under the age of 17 are not allowed to see the film without the supervision of a parent or adult.

In fact, ‘Constantine’ was already given an R rating, which caused displeasure from Francis Lawrence, as he told her explained:
“One of the most important things about the first film for me was that, according to Warner Bros. followed the rules for making a PG-13 film in terms of violence, gore, language and sexuality. But the evaluation panel gave us an R because of the gray area. And my big regret was that we have an R-rated movie that is actually a PG-13 movie. And if I could have made an R, I really would have made an R-rated movie. I would have made it much scarier and more brutal.”
So what that means is, if Francis Lawrence gets the chance to create R-rated ‘Constantine 2’ from scratch, we can expect the sequel to be much tougher than its predecessor. Certainly not the worst circumstances to send Keanu Reeves into battle with many creatures from hell.
