‘The one who broke our heart’: this is how moving the ‘Friends’ makers say goodbye to ‘Chandler’ Matthew Perry

Fans of ‘Friends’ know it. The episode titles of the series always followed a certain structure in the English original: “The One with …” introduced each episode title, giving an indication of what the focus was on. Unfortunately, this was not adopted for the German translation, but a completely different title was simply invented. In a joint statement, ‘Friends’ creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, as well as their director and executive producer Kevin S. Bright, remembered Matthew Perry, who died this weekend at just 54, with the following episode title:

“The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken” aka “The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken” rewrite your press release and think of Perry.

Perry’s Friends co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow have not commented publicly as of press time. According to media reports, they want to make a joint statement.

Morgan Fairchild, who played Chandler’s mother, wrote: “I am devastated by the untimely death of my ‘son’. The loss of such a brilliant young actor is a shock. I send love and condolences to his friends and family, especially his father, John Bennett Perry, with whom I worked on “Flamingo Road” and “Falcon Crest.”

Maggie Wheeler, who played the annoying Janice over and over again with Chandler on the show, shared: “What a loss. The world will miss you, Matthew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your all-too-short life will live on. I feel so blessed for every creative moment we shared.”

And Paul Rudd, who joined the series towards the end of the series as Lisa Kudrow’s friend Phoebe, said: “Words cannot express how sad I am to hear of Matthew’s death. You will be missed so much.”

Matthew Perry was found lifeless in his Los Angeles home on October 28, 2023. The actor was 54 years old.
