Val Calnègia: Ticino’s hidden valley
Ticino Val Calnègia was once known only to locals because the valley begins almost unnoticed above the waterfall in the village of Foroglio in the Bavona Valley. Today a hiking trail leads up the vertical rock face. The best part is: Only the experts get lost in the approximately three kilometer long valley surrounded by high mountains. So peace and quiet are guaranteed here. A special feature is the shelters and mountain huts called Splueia, located on and under large rocks.
Kaltbrunnental (BL/SO): an oasis at the gates of Basel
Things are quiet in Kaltbrunnental these days. About 15,000 years ago, the shady spot not far from the city of Basel was a hotspot for hunters and gatherers; lime caves served as protection for them. Karst soil creates a spectacular phenomenon: Streams suddenly disappear underground, only to reappear somewhere else. The area is criss-crossed by a cave system, the secrets of which can be explored on a “karst nature trail” run by the local mountaineering association. Did you know that 48 different animals live in caves?
Vallon de Nant (VD): Plant paradise
Stretching into the mountains above the village of Bex in the canton of Vaud, the Vallon de Nant is characterized by contrasts. The valley is located at an altitude of 1250 to 3000 meters above sea level and connects gentle alpine meadows with mountain glacier heights. The vegetation is correspondingly diverse: up to 1,000 different plant species are said to live here, which is why the valley was declared a nature reserve in 1969. Anyone interested in the flora of the region should visit the Thomasia Alpine Garden in Le Pont de Nant. 2,000 mountain plants, each labeled, grow here.
Weisstannental: St. Gallen’s wild east
The wolf and the ibex reclaimed the Weisstannental near Lake Walen and showed good taste in doing so. Because St. The valley at the eastern end of the canton of St. Gallen is a jewel with no traffic and little tourism. Mountain goats even made history here: About 100 years ago, a few fawns were stolen in Italy and taken to St. Petersburg. When raised at the Peter and Paul Wildlife Park in St. Gallen, the first five animals were released there. Anyone more interested in the Swiss national animal can expand their knowledge on the ibex nature trail. Overall, the Weisstannental is an ideal walking area. Don’t miss the “Alte Post” museum in the hamlet of Weisstannental, where the “good old days” are kept alive. The valley is also known for its waterfalls, the highest of which falls below 86 meters.
Maderanertal (UR): A jewel of peace in the Gotthard massif
Things are rarely quiet in Gotthard: convoys of cars and rattling freight trains characterize the scene. However, there is a hidden oasis of peace right next to the sometimes congested traffic axis. Maderan Valley does not attract many visitors. But once upon a time, hopes were different: Hotel Maderanertal still bears witness to the great times of tourism. Nearly 100 years ago, the hotel was a hangout for statesmen and artists. Those times are over and anyone who goes hiking here can enjoy the power of the Swiss mountains all by themselves.
Breccaschlund (FR): Unknown primitive landscape
Breccaschlund on Lake Schwarzsee in Freiburg is one of the most extraordinary and probably the most unknown high valleys in Switzerland. The landscape was shaped by the glaciers of the last ice age, which created a special primitive landscape. Limestone rocks, some piled on top of each other to form dry stone walls, are characteristic. Various hiking routes run from Schwarzsee to the Brecca Pass. On hunger strike: There are three Alps where hikers can strengthen themselves.
Safiental (GR): In the footsteps of Walser culture
Anyone setting out in June or July will find a carpet of flowers stretching as far as the eye can see in Graubsunu’s Safiental. But even if the cows have feasted on the flowers, the Rhine tributary valley, where dairy traditions are still alive, is a feast for the eyes. Safiental was shaped by the Walser people, who farmed on steep slopes from the 13th century onwards. The valley is of course a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts: hikers and cyclists will find many landscaped trails here. But the valley also has something to offer for those interested in culture: On the one hand, there are the Walser houses that have survived for centuries, and on the other hand, there is the Art Safiental art festival where land art objects are exhibited. Valley.
