At the “Arche” robotics demo event near Geneva, researchers from all over Switzerland, including the Swiss Army, are testing their latest innovations.

Swiss robotics researcher Professor Roland Siegwart sees great potential in the peaceful use of artificial intelligence and robots: “We are currently working on a new generation of robots that can undertake complex tasks in everyday environments. I see the next generation of robots as tools for humans.”

But technological progress does not stop in the arms industry. On the contrary: Artificial intelligence and robots are already used in armed conflicts by many militaries around the world. “We have had autonomous weapons systems since at least the 1980s. Famous German security expert Frank Saurer says, “Artificial intelligence is now transforming into all kinds of weapon systems.”

The question arises: Wouldn’t it be more logical and ethical to remove humans from the line of fire and use autonomous robots thanks to artificial intelligence to fight? Wouldn’t this prevent many people from suffering? Or is it the opposite when autonomous killer robots suddenly come into play? Security expert Saurer emphasizes that every technology can be misused: “The standard example is that machines do not rape in war. That’s true until I design them to do exactly that.”

What will the armed conflict of the future look like? So how is the Swiss army preparing for this? All about it – on the podcast today!
