Anyone who is already looking forward to spring due to autumn’s gloomy weather can take precautions now: The end of October is the ideal time to plant flower bulbs. Crocuses sprout in March, and tulips and daffodils around Easter. Scarlett Allenspach (35) from Urbanroots gives tips on planting onions.
“Planting flower bulbs is simple,” says the expert. First, the soil on the bed is loosened, weeds are removed and a hole is dug. The bulbs are then placed in the soil with their roots facing down. “The onion should be planted at a depth of approximately three times its height.” Also, the principle applies that the larger the bulb, the deeper it should be planted in the soil.
Weeds as frost protection
The hole where the planted bulbs were located can now be covered with weeds and soil. “Weeds act as frost protection,” explains Allenspach. If the soil is clay, he recommends adding some sand to the hole. This improves the quality of the soil and allows water to drain more easily.
Easy to care for tuber
Flower bulbs are easy to care for. They also survive long and cold winters without any problems. “Because of the sheer volume of the onions,” as Allenspach knows. Some bulbs even need some freezing to thrive. They help prevent freezing by converting their own starch into sugar. Most bulbs do not need water as they are adequately watered by rain.
In spring, colorful flowers such as tulips and crocus herald spring. “Not only is it beautiful to look at, it’s also good for insects.” Because: Insects need flowers for pollen and nectar.
