Sylvester Stallone returns as a superhero – in the sequel to an action film that became a hit on Prime Video after its canceled theatrical release

“Samaritan” was originally set to hit theaters starring Sylvester Stallone as an aging superhero, but already had a release date. But then they changed course – and the action thriller ended up on the Amazon Prime Video streaming service instead. And now a franchise could be coming out of it, as a sequel is in the works.

How According to reports, Amazon is developing “Samaritan 2” and is once again banking on the star power of Sylvester Stallone. But the ‘Rocky’ actor isn’t the only major character returning in the sequel.

Screenwriter Bragi F. Schut, who also wrote the script for the first film, is also back. So fans of ‘Samaritan’ can look forward to the story being told in one piece. And there are probably plenty of fans: according to Amazon, the action film will be released in August 2022 the provider’s most streamed film for three weeks in a row and its success exceeded expectations.

“Samaritan 2”: Can the sequel better fulfill its potential?

So it’s no wonder that Amazon Prime Video now wants to back the same horse again. “Samaritan” from director Julius Avery (“The Pope’s Exorcist”) is about 13-year-old Sam (Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton), who is convinced that his strange and reclusive neighbor Joe Smith (Sylvester Stallone) is actually a superhero. . Because one of them disappeared in his town more than twenty years ago – and because Joe appears to have superhuman strength, Sam is now convinced he has tracked down the hero who was thought dead…

In Sidney Schering’s FILMSTARTS review, there were 3 out of 5 possible stars for “Samaritan”. The conclusion: “A fundamentally solid change from the usual comedy blockbusters that had the potential to be even more.”

It remains to be seen whether the potential to “be more” will be realized with “Samaritan 2.” It is not yet known what the sequel will be about, and a possible start of production cannot be anticipated as Hollywood actors are still on strike. Stallone had spoken out loud about the deal for the superhero sequel completed before the strike began. However, we don’t expect “Samaritan 2” to release on Amazon Prime Video before 2025.
