Learn more from EDA
The country list of the Federal Foreign Office (EDA) provides a comprehensive overview of the security situation in all countries. You can find this information on the office’s website under the heading “Travel Advice and Representatives”. In just a few clicks you can find out whether the FDFA fully recommends traveling to a country, whether it considers the situation to be stable and what risks exist, for example, in connection with demonstrations. According to the EDA, you can avoid contacting the relevant Swiss embassies. These are also based on FDFA travel advisories.

Contact tour operator
“We are in regular contact with local agencies or hotels and adapt our offers if the security situation in a country worsens,” says Markus Flick, media spokesman for the Kuoni travel group. This may mean removing a particular region from the tour or temporarily removing an entire country from the travel agent’s itinerary. “If you still want to travel to a place like this, you have to do it on your own and take responsibility yourself.”
3
Learn about cancellation options
“Unless there is an official travel warning for a country, general terms and conditions apply,” says Flick. “If someone no longer feels comfortable traveling to a particular country, we’ll see to what extent we can accommodate.”
4
Install the “Travel Manager App”.
With EDA’s Travel Manager app, available on iOS and Android devices, travelers can receive important information in the event of a crisis, on-site or during the trip. It accesses GPS data and enables FDFA to receive an SMS with instructions on how to act in an emergency, information and return travel options. The app can be used to call the emergency numbers of the country you are traveling to (fire brigade, police, ambulance) or to contact Swiss embassies in case of lost travel documents in an emergency, for example. If you are unsure, you can call the EDA helpline from anywhere in the world.

Consider the emergency
Nicolas Stockhammer (48), scientific head of the research department for Counterterrorism, Countering Violent Extremism and Intelligence at the Danube University Krems (A), says that caution is a high priority as the threat situation within and outside Europe is currently generally increasing. Author of the book “Deceptive Calm.” When you observe your surroundings, you automatically become more alert. People who behave conspicuously are noticed more quickly. “Things like unattended luggage are also suspicious and a sign of a possible terrorist attack.” According to Stockhammer, in such cases you should immediately leave the danger area and notify a security guard or the police.
