Theatrical release postponed: You now have to wait a lot longer for the sequel to the best action film of the year

At the box office, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1” fell short of expectations, grossing over $567.5 million worldwide at the box office. Ultimately, the strong competition from the box office high-flyers “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” was also to blame. But these numbers say absolutely nothing about the quality of the Tom Cruise blockbuster. Quite the opposite! With 5 out of 5 possible stars in the official FILMSTARTS review by editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen, “Mission: Impossible 7” is even the best action film of the year for us!

Anticipation for “Mission: Impossible 8” will likely be huge in many places. Not only because the previous film left the audience with a huge cliffhanger, but also because the film offered sensational action and stunts that you simply cannot get enough of. But now there is bad news for all “Mission: Impossible” and Tom Cruise fans: as now announced, the planned release date for part 8 cannot be met.

“Mission: Impossible 8” is released a year later

“Mission: Impossible 8” was actually scheduled to hit the big screen in this country on June 27, 2024. However, the theatrical release has now been postponed for almost an entire year. The action blockbuster will now premiere in the United States on May 23, 2025. It can be assumed that the German start will fall on the same day since it is a Thursday.

The reason why ‘Mission: Impossible 8’, which now also has a new title and will no longer be called ‘Dead Reckoning Part 2’, is postponed has to do with production delays due to the strike that is currently taking place. Production on Part 8 was halted so the actors could promote ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ – until the SAG-AFTRA strike occurred in mid-July 2023, bringing the dream factory to a standstill almost overnight. If the strike is not resolved in the coming weeks, we can expect further reports of postponements.

These films have also been postponed

The postponement of “Mission: Impossible 8” has now also meant that “A Quiet Place: Day One”, a prequel to the successful horror films “A Quiet Place” and “A Quiet Place 2”, will not be released on January 7 as planned will be released in theaters in March 2024, but will take up the original week of “Mission: Impossible” and will be released in America on June 28, 2024 (in Germany it should be June 27). Emily Blunt is no longer in the lead role here, but Lupita Nyong’o, who won an Oscar for “12 Years A Slave”. Prehistory no longer takes place in rural America, but in New York City.

The fantasy comedy “Imaginary Friends” with Ryan Reynolds, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Steve Carell (US release: May 17, in Germany probably May 16) and a yet-untitled film “Spongebob Squarepants” were also postponed. was supposed to hit theaters on May 23, but will now be released on December 19, 2025 (it’ll probably be on the same day in this country, since it’s a Thursday).
