In a few days it will be eerily beautiful again! The biggest Halloween parties will take place next weekend. While things are still more traditional in Switzerland, in the US it’s no longer just witches and horror clowns.
“Halloween in America is like a carnival,” explains Reto Hanselmann (42), organizer of Season of the Witch, Switzerland’s most famous Halloween party. “A lot of people in this country still think you have to dress like a zombie. Your imagination has no limits.”
Barbie and Ariel are trending in the USA
You’ll probably see mostly Barbie and Ken across the Big Pond this year. A spokesperson for Halloweencostumes.com told US portal TMZ that Barbie-inspired looks are selling nine times more than last year. The reason for this is the successful movie of Greta Gerwig (40), who achieved the cinema hit of the year with the movie in which she shared the leading role with Margot Robbie (33). According to the speaker, the live-action adaptation of the Disney classic “The Little Mermaid” with Halle Bailey (23) also inspired many people.
Kurt Oetterli (62), owner of the Atop costume shop in Zurich and Stäfa ZH, does not observe these trends here, but still sees the movement away from scary clothes. “Classic Halloween costumes like the Witch and Dracula are still doing well, but mainstream costumes are also on the rise,” he says. “Especially ’80s activewear really works. “We also have some with blood stains on them.”
Harry Potter costumes are being revived in Bern
Things are different in Bern. According to Manuela Pieren (65) from costume rental company Häxebäse, people there still rely on the spook factor. «I’m noticing the return of Harry Potter costumes this year. The Addams Family is also in more demand than ever.” Although he repeatedly emphasized in his consultations that any costume was appropriate for Halloween, “it is still firmly established in the minds of the Swiss that a scary costume is part of Halloween.”
The origin of Halloween dates back to a tradition in Catholic Ireland. Irish immigrants later embellished it further in the United States. The festival has become increasingly widespread in Europe since the 90s. “Everything was well received here too, as we know that there is a similar tradition in the Räbeliechtli parades,” explains social scientist Meret Fehlmann (47) from the University of Zurich. We are also very open to American popular culture.
Fear is trivialized for children
The fact that Halloween in the US seems less scary in terms of costumes may be due to the mindset. “Fear of Satanism has always been prevalent in America,” says Fehlmann. “That may be one of the reasons why they don’t just rely on the scary numbers out there.” He observes that fear is trivialized for children in this country. “Even vampires are good friends next door.”
Vampires will probably also be shown at the Zurich Kaufleuten next Saturday. Then Reto Hanselmann’s Halloween party takes place. Three dance floors in total are lavishly decorated. The guest list is full of local and foreign celebrities. “It’s important to me that everyone feels comfortable in their costume.” With it, everyone not only doesn’t have to wear make-up, but can also wear more elaborate costumes. “For example, at Heidi Klum’s Halloween party, you might see dentists with their coats stained, so you don’t need to wear elaborate makeup.”
Melanie Winiger set a positive example
As a positive example, he points to the outfit Melanie Winiger, 44, wore to her party last year. She appeared on stage for the first time with her boyfriend Timo Todzi (29). She presented herself as the sexy Sandy from the musical “Grease” and wore a matching costume as Danny. “It’s a perfect example of how Halloween is more than zombies and ghosts. I really enjoyed it.”
According to Reto Hanselmann, Halloween is the strictest time of the year. So when it comes to costumes, she makes it easy: “I’ll choose a scary costume again this year.” Two years ago she dressed as a busty cabaret lady, and last year she dressed as a horror clown. She doesn’t want to reveal exactly what she’ll be wearing next week. “That’s just it: A lot of people will stop laughing when they see me.”
