As Swiss, we are proud of our country’s train infrastructure, and rightly so. Public transportation is not only practical, but also beautifully located; Thus, Switzerland shows its best side in train travel. Below Blick presents seven of the most beautiful train routes.

Furka steam train

You can enjoy a truly romantic journey on the Furka steam train. Authentically restored steam locomotives pass along the Rhone and Mutt glaciers and over the Furka Pass. The route takes about two hours, starting in Oberwald VS and ending in Realp UR or vice versa. You can start the return journey via Göschenen UR or Chur GR.

Vigezzina-Centovalli railway

During the journey, which takes approximately 2 hours, the southern route passes through Ticino and northern Italy. On the 52-kilometer-long route, you can admire the magnificent panorama between Centovalli TI and Vigezzo (I) and cross 83 bridges and viaducts. If you want to examine certain areas more closely, you can also take breaks along the way. So you can spare some more time for the Ticino cable cars Intragna-Pila-Costa, Verdasio-Rasa, Monte Comino, the church tower and regional museum in Intragna TI or the traditional Saturday market in Domodossola (I).

Bernina Express

The classic route of the Bernina Express is St. St. Moritz GR to Tirano (I). The experience is from Chur GR to St. It can be supplemented by the Rhaetian Railway to Moritz and the Bernina Express from Tirano to Lugano TI. On the same journey you can cross the Albula Line, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or look out the window at beautiful Valtellina in southern Italy. During the impressive and relaxing train journey, you will admire the Bernina Group glaciers, the Bernina Pass, Lago Bianco and Poschiavo GR.

Jurassic subline

The Jura foothill line is a railway line running from Olten SO via Solothurn, Grenchen SO, Biel BE, Neuchâtel, Yverdon-les-Bains VD and Morges VD to Lausanne VD. The train passes by lakes, vineyards and picturesque villages that offer magnificent scenery. Since the route on Lake Neuchâtel is very winding, inclined trains are used on this route.

Around Lake Thun

This route is suitable for anyone who likes to walk next to bodies of water. You can take the train from one end of Lake Thun to the other in just over half an hour. As you move along the water, you often have a direct view of the lake and the mountains beyond. To travel without changing the route, we recommend intercity train number 61.

via original cantons

From Erstfeld RI to Zurich or vice versa you pass through the heart of Switzerland. While passing through the original cantons, you can admire fascinating landscapes as well as historical places such as Rütli. The windows offer magnificent views of the famous Swiss mountains and lush greenery. During the train journey, you pass directly by four lakes. The entire journey takes about one and a half hours and can be done by Interregio train number 46 without changing trains.

Glacier Express

St. The entire Glacier Express route from Moritz GR to Zermatt VS (or vice versa) takes approximately eight hours. You can experience the magnificent diversity of Switzerland along the entire route, while all sections promise unique views. On the journey from eastern Switzerland via central Switzerland to western Switzerland, you pass through many language regions, Swiss cultural heritage and also different flora. In total, you pass through 91 tunnels, 291 bridges, and also climb through deep valleys to the 2033-meter-high Oberalp Pass.
