Martin Scorsese’s new film “Killers Of The Flower Moon” was released in German cinemas this week. It’s all about the real Osage murders that happened in Oklahoma in the early 1920s. Not only Oscar-winning superstars such as Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), Robert De Niro (“Raging Bull”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) can be seen in front of the camera, but also the relatively unknown Lily Gladstone.
She takes on the female lead role in ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ and can be seen as Mollie Burkhart, the native wife of Ernest, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Lily Gladstone is already considered a top contender for the Best Actress Oscar next year – and the 37-year-old actress has even mastered her complex role brilliantly. Lily Gladstone is not a newcomer, but has already attracted attention in other films.
The critics first saw Lily Gladstone in Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain women“, where she had to prove herself in her first major role alongside Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart and Michelle Williams. The gentle episodic drama, with strong acting across the board, is especially for fans of the quiet character drama and revolves around loneliness, longing, hope and identity.
After ‘Certain Women’, Lily Gladstone would be seen again in Kelly Reichardt’s next film, ‘First Cow’. Only in a supporting role, but with a formal parallel with “Killers Of The Flower Moon”. ‘First Cow’ is also set in a historical setting that is reminiscent of Western cinema. You can stream the drama in this country on Prime Channel MUBI – the subscription comes with a seven-day free trial.
Lily Gladstone also appeared in four episodes of the “Billions” series and has two other films that screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: “The Unknown Country,” for which Gladstone also wrote the screenplay, and “Fancy Dance.” The latter, a drama by Eric Tremblay, centers on the disappearance of a young woman from a reservation in Oklahoma. In terms of content, this certainly sounds like a film that could complement “Killers Of The Flower Moon” well.
So one thing can be said: it will be interesting to see in which direction Lily Gladstone’s career will develop in the future. Perhaps a similar rise awaits her as Margot Robbie once did, who also became a superstar thanks to Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf Of Wall Streets” – and is now an integral part of Hollywood.
