“You spend your time either in shoes or in bed. As British entrepreneur John Wildsmith once said, it’s worth investing in both.
Mattresses are important for a restful sleep. Daniela Thöny (58) is managing director and owner of mattress and pillow supplier Elsa Schweiz AG. “A good bed promotes relaxation, recovery and well-being,” she tells blick. A proper mattress is especially important as you become more prone to restlessness and back pain as you get older.
Not too soft nor too hard
So what should you pay attention to when buying a bed? On the one hand, it should not be too soft, according to Thöny, because without resistance the back will not be well supported. On the other hand, a very hard mattress is equally harmful to your back. The cross may be damaged, especially if the mattress is too hard. “If the bed is too hard, the cross will not lie flat. “This can lead to a hollowness in the back,” warns the owner of the family business.
Ideally, the mattress should support your back: “It’s best not to sink completely into it, but only sink into the bed at the support points,” the expert advises. These support points include the shoulders and pelvis.
Try and test the mattress
But there is no ready recipe for success. “Every person is different and therefore every back is different,” says Thöny. The most important thing when choosing a mattress is to try it on. And that doesn’t mean rapid testing at the furniture store. “You should sleep on the mattress for a few nights to make sure it meets your needs,” advises the owner of a mattress and pillow company.
Many providers offer a trial month where you can test the mattress at home.
Quality is worth it
When buying a mattress, you can generally trust that more expensive models are better than cheaper ones. As Thöny points out, although a cheaper mattress may initially feel the same as a more expensive one, the cheaper one usually has a much shorter lifespan. “Bad quality mattresses soften over time and you sink into the mattress much more than you should.”
Bedding should also be washed and changed
You should change your mattress approximately every ten years. “There are providers who say you can keep the mattress for up to 30 years. “For hygiene reasons, it is better to change the mattress in advance,” explains the expert.
It is recommended to wash the mattress cover every three to four years: after all, the body loses a lot of fluid at night through sweat, which can sink into the mattress, which, as Thöny explains, is not very hygienic. Many providers take care of washing the mattress for their customers.
A good pillow for the neck
The right pillow is also very important. A pillow can make a big difference, especially for people with neck, shoulder and headaches.
In addition to regular feather pillows, there are also special curved pillows that support the neck: “These neck pillows are recommended by doctors even for orthopedic purposes,” says Thöny. Here too it is worth investing in a high quality pillow as it will last longer and is completely washable.
