Disney is often seen as synonymous with family-friendly and colorful entertainment. However, Mouse Studio’s portfolio also includes a number of productions that have repeatedly broken the mold. In the 90s this certainly included the animated series “Gargoyles – On the Wings of Justice”. It was designed for a young audience, but still presented itself surprisingly mature: hard action that could sometimes really hurt, and a complex plot that was told over three seasons, made the series interesting for an older audience as well.

The series is still revered by many fans – “Gargoyles – On the Wings of Justice” also enjoys the reputation to be one of the best Disney series productions ever. It is no surprise that rumors continue to circulate that the stories about the stone winged monsters are being reprinted. Recently it was even said that a “Gargoyles” movie was in development, unfortunately these rumors turned out to be false.
But now it seems like things are moving again in the development of a live-action implementation. How now exclusively reported, it should Screenwriter Gary Dauberman (“IT”) and horror expert James Wan (“The Conjuring”) brings the stone justice warriors to new life – as a live-action series on Disney+.

Dauberman and James Wan or his production company Atomic Monster have worked together in the past, for example on the box office horror hits ‘Annabelle’ series. Dauberman will not only be responsible for the scripts and serve as producer for the series ‘Gargoyles’, but will also direct the fate of the series as showrunner. As with previous collaborations, James Wan will produce with his company Atomic Monster. Since the live-action reboot of “Gargoyles” is still in the very early stages of development, the series is not expected to start before 2025.
That’s what “Gargoyles” is about
In Scotland in the year 994, gargoyles, powerful flying creatures that turn to stone during the day, fight alongside humans. But they are betrayed and almost exterminated. Only a small group of the once powerful creatures can escape the genocide, but they seem to have been turned to stone forever.
But no sleep lasts forever, so the last of their kind wake up in present-day New York, where wealthy industrialist David Xanatos (voice in the original: Jonathan Frakes) wants to exploit them for his dark plans. But the gargoyles soon realize his baser motives and turn away from their supposed savior. From now on, together with police officer Elisa (Salli Richardson-Whitfield), they fight for what is right and must deal with the pitfalls of the modern world.
If you’re really interested in rewatching the series: You can currently find all three seasons of the animated cult production in the Disney+ streaming offering – and it’s worth taking a look, because “Gargoyles – On the Wings of Justice” has an excellent cast, especially in the original version. Actors such as Keith David, Salli Richardson, ‘Star Trek’ legends Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner, Ed Asner and John Rhys-Davies, among others, lend their voices to the characters.
