Gemmi Passage
Gemmi Pass is the most versatile of Swiss passes. On the one hand, it is one of the possible access points to the Wildstrubel for ambitious climbers. Via ferrata enthusiasts, on the other hand, will find the longest and most breathtaking via ferrata in Switzerland in the Daubenhornwand – recommended only for experienced and daring mountain hikers. Hikers will also find happiness in Gemmi on the hiking trail along Lake Daubensee. It goes almost nine kilometers from the Sunnbüel mountain station to the Gemmi Pass, which can be reached by gondola from Kandersteg; You can easily cover the 900 meters from here to Leukerbad either on foot with numerous steep bends or by cable car. But first you should stop by Gemmi Lodge and enjoy the magnificent view from the viewing platform. If you have a little more time, you can also spend the night here.
Lötschen pass
Not far from the Gemmi Pass as the crow flies, the Lötschen Pass transports visitors into an incredibly fascinating mountain world. While the BLS carries passengers deep into the mountain at high speed from the Bern region to Valais via the Lötschberg Tunnel, things are quieter on the pass. The Lötschenpasshütte, at the historic pass connecting Kandersteg and Lötschental, will be open until the beginning of November and will offer the opportunity to split challenging walks into two enjoyable day stages. The starting point is Selden, a small village in the Gasterntal, which you can reach by Alpine taxi from Kandersteg; Be sure to make a reservation in advance. You can reach Lötschenpasshütte in approximately 3.5 hours. The next day we descend towards Lötschental. If you still have enough energy in your legs, you can go down to Ferden in four hours. Otherwise, the tour can also be shortened via Lauchernalp.
Furka Pass
The Furka Pass is one of the most beautiful passes in Switzerland and, above all, a place full of history. This passage was also used during the Roman period, and there was lively trade along the mule route from the 13th century. In 1921 the first mail bus passed over the pass, replacing the horse-drawn mail. The Postauto route is still in operation today. Of particular interest is the 3-pass journey from Meiringen or Andermatt, which runs smoothly over the Susten-Furka-Grimsel Pass. Nostalgics will enjoy the steam train ride on the Furka mountain route. Thanks to the efforts of railway enthusiasts, this old railway line, which was replaced by the winter-proof Furka Base Tunnel in 1982, has been preserved and still continues to transport guests from Realp to Oberwald in the summer months, from June to October.
Maighels Pass
The idyllic Maighels Pass is part of the first stage of the Route of the Four Springs, which passes through the origins of the Rhine, Reuss, Ticino and Rhone rivers. The starting point is the Oberalp Pass. From here you will continue towards the Maighels Pass via the SAC hut Camona da Maighels. There are many large wetlands on this section of the hike. Accordingly, you pass through numerous small lakes, ponds and steppes with characteristic vegetation until the pass. Just on the other side of the pass is Lake Portgeren, a popular fishing lake worth a short break. From here, it’s about an hour’s walk to Vermigelhütte, 2,042 meters above sea level; This is an excellent starting point for further walking, cycling tours and, in winter, ski tours. It’s worth spending a night in this beautiful place. From here you can reach the town of Andermatt in two and a half hours.
Monte Moro Pass
This ancient passage between the Saas Valley on the Swiss side and Valle Anzasca on the Italian side was once a popular route for smugglers. Today it is celebrated primarily as a stage of the Tour Monte Rosa, one of the most challenging walks in Europe. The starting point is the Mattmark reservoir above Saas-Almagell. Here you first go to the Tälli region along the left bank; Here a beautiful mule track stretches like waves over rock outcroppings to the gorge. The striking golden Madonna statue symbolizing the transition can be seen from afar. Just below the pass is Rifugio Oberto Maroli, at 2,782 meters above sea level. Here you can dine in the best Italian style and enjoy the views of the Monte Rosa mountains before making the steep descent to Macugnaga. From here we return to Domodossola by bus and to Switzerland by train.
Col de Balme
This worthwhile border walk starts at the mountain station of the Vallorcine cable car near Chamonix in France and heads via Col de Balme to Col de la Forclaz above Martigny. The tour is one of the most beautiful high mountain walks in the Lower Valais. From Vallorcine it goes continuously towards the Col de Balme border crossing. Again and again, sparse patches of forest offer views of the valley and the majestic Mont-Blanc towers above it. At the top of the pass, the Refuge du Col de Balme invites you to take a well-deserved break before heading towards the Swiss side towards Trent. On the descent it is worth following the slightly longer route via Buvette du Glacier du Trient. Here you will not only be wonderfully welcomed with a freshly baked cake, but you can also see the glacial tongue of the Trient Glacier. Now the slow final section descends to the Col de la Forclaz, a few meters higher.
Lokmanier Pass
The Lukmanier Pass, which connects the towns of Disentis in Graubeğen and Biasca in Ticino, is considerably lower than other Alpine passes, at 1,914 meters above sea level. This situation and the establishment of the Disentis monastery in 720 gave Lokmanya great importance as a north-south travel route in ancient times. Today, in terms of tourism, the pass at Surselva is overshadowed by its larger neighbour, the Gotthard Pass, through which all traffic from German-speaking Switzerland to Ticino and Italy passes. It is also kept open in winter to make the pass a little more attractive. Anyone who visits the Lukmanier Pass will encounter an incredible variety of landscapes. It is particularly worthwhile to visit the Selvasecca forest reserve near Acquacalda, where small moors and wetlands alternate with ancient forests. Some pine trees in this area are over 300 years old, and the habitat is inhabited by deer, roe deer, foxes and many birds.
