Lower Franconia in northwestern Bavaria is still an insider tip. In autumn, the region on the River Main impresses with golden vineyards, wonderful hiking and cycling experiences and pleasant hours in inns.

Lower Franconia – an insider tip in northern Bavaria

“Wollense än Oobadsdn to Mülla-Dhurgau?” The Lower Franconian dialect is often a mystery to foreigners. And no: the fact that hard consonants are not spoken in northwestern Bavaria is due not to the excellent white wine grown on the slopes of the Main River, but to the ease characteristic of the Franconians. And there is no better way to experience this comfort than in the wine bars of the region, where local Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner or Kernen are served to the table accompanied by hearty dishes that contradict all trends towards healthy eating. more delicious.

The region of Lower Franconia is located in the northwestern corner of Bavaria and extends from the city of Aschaffenburg near Frankfurt to Bamberg, which currently belongs to Upper Franconia. The lifeline is the Main, on the slopes of which the famous Franconian wine grows. Especially in autumn, the orange-red vines are a feast for the eyes. And a source of drinkable pleasure: you can buy fresh Sauser in many places in autumn. Besides culinary delights, the region also offers a healthy dose of culture, with hiking trails and cycling tours along the Main cycle route: Würzburg’s baroque-style residence has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fly: If you really want to taste Franconian cuisine, you should go to “Lämmle” in Würzburg. This typical inn with a rustic atmosphere is located in the middle of the old town. There is also the Bavarian cheese variety “Oobadsdn” at the beginning of the text.

Fischland-Darss-Zingst – storm-torn Baltic Sea

When a peninsula has a name as complex as Fischland-Darss-Zingst, it indicates two things: It is either a political entity or a geographical feature. Both apply to the peninsula between Rostock and Stralsund in northeastern Germany. As a result of storms, storm waves and sand drifts over the past centuries, three independent islands eventually became a crescent approximately 45 kilometers long, connected to the mainland.

The situation here is still dramatic and wild in autumn, when storms ravage the country and waves crash against the cliffs. So this place is especially beautiful; especially since the holiday guests have left the peninsula and you can walk alone for miles along the beach and let the wind blow under your nose. Great for closure. You can also witness two natural sights in autumn: 60,000 cranes stop here on their way south, and deers fight for females in the coastal forests (national park) and sand dunes.

Fly: The most beautiful place on the island is Ahrenshoop, where many artists settled. You can find the best cake in the city at the mill.

Hainich National Park – in the forest of Germany

Germany is blessed with many large areas of forest. Almost 30 percent of the country is covered with forests. One of the most beautiful and ecologically important is Hainich in the state of Thuringia – Germany’s largest contiguous deciduous forest at 16,000 hectares. A large part of the area has been declared a national park and world natural heritage site by UNESCO. The primitive beech forest that once covered a large part of Central Europe has been preserved here.

Anyone who walks in Hainich (many marked hiking trails have been established) will experience a region that was the daily life of our ancestors in the Middle Ages. If you want to stay on the road for a few days, you should use the Hainichlandweg, which stretches for 130 kilometers through the region. The treetop trail near the community of Alterstedt offers an interesting view of the forest. Walking above the treetops is an impressive experience, especially in autumn when hundreds of thousands of trees glow in every imaginable shade of red and yellow.

Fly: Hainich is surrounded by some picturesque villages and towns, such as Bad Langensalza with its timber-framed houses and Friedericken Therme, where you can enjoy healthy wellness in mud and sulfur baths. A must-visit place for history buffs is the Wartburg near Eisenach, where Martin Luther began translating the Bible into German in the 16th century.
