To seduce women: Animals pretend to be shy

According to a study, some male animals are probably afraid of the opposite sex. After all, like praying mantises, they can become victims of “sexual cannibalism.” (archive image)

Moreover, according to Giovanni Spezie and colleagues from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, animals want to arouse the curiosity of the potential sexual partner through shy behavior, contrast with boastful elements or even fear the female.

Male golden-crowned bowerbirds (Amblyornis macgregoriae) play peek-a-boo with females and hide on the opposite side of their erected bower until they stop in one spot and display their shiny neck crests. Tragopan pheasants crouch behind a stone before standing up and showing their brightly colored pectoral wings.

Researchers believe the men probably wanted to use their initial reticence to make themselves seem less intrusive and threatening. “Sexual pressure is probably related to the evolution of display behavior in pheasants and bowerbirds,” his colleague Thomas MacGillavry explained to APA. For example, toothed bowerbirds (Scenopoeetes dentirostris) often grab females by the neck and do not allow them to leave their courtship site.

Researchers suspect that in some cases, males hope to arouse the curiosity of their female companions with such maneuvers. In addition, the initial reticence makes the later presentation of its true magnificence all the more spectacular. Finally, as researchers explained, some men are also afraid of the opposite sex. In some spiders and praying mantises, if the males are not careful, they fall victim to “sexual cannibalism.”
