Idyllically located, tax-efficient and within pleasant distance of neighbors, Risch ZG is popular with the rich and powerful. One person in particular likes it: Daniel Vasella, former boss of Novartis. The 70-year-old now owns two impressive villas and a magnificent estate with more than 500 meters of uninterrupted access to the lake.
The jewel in his collection is the Aabach mansion. It was once planned to be a training center for Novartis executives. Since redevelopment could not be done, Vasella purchased approximately 50,000 square meters of land, including the historic Villa Göhner, in 2014. Building contractor Ernst Göhner (1900–1971) lived here and, according to Vasella, had the farmhouse and Stöckli built, located on a 2,500 square meter plot of land.
Vasella is now demolishing and rebuilding this farmhouse. An apartment building with parking is planned for rent and sale, as shown in the planning application.
When asked, Vasella writes: “The new building is again a wooden building with the same area as the previous building and divided into apartments.” The design comes from Stuttgart-based German architect Fabio Magnago.
The application was approved last week and construction work is expected to begin soon. Vasella writes that there were no objections or objections. This is the first property he will rent.
Although Vasella has retreated into seclusion in recent years, his name seems to be etched in Swiss memory: in 2013, he, more than anyone else, helped the robbery attempt make a breakthrough when it was learned that he had received 72 million francs. Severance pay from Novartis
He was called “Super Dan”
He received “total compensation” of over 400 million francs during his time at Novartis. According to “Finanz und Wirtschaft”, no CEO has ever received this much salary.
The native of Grisons rose twice: first as a doctor, then as a manager. A global company was formed by the merger of Sandoz and Ciba to form Novartis. He was loved and appreciated in the media: he was called “Super Dan”.
But from 2013 onwards, Vasella came to be seen as a “robber of the nation” who sometimes shamelessly flaunted his wealth: He once flew by helicopter to Thurgau to select 60 Japanese koi for a pond on the Novartis campus. Price per piece: 1000 francs.
Even though he was the boss of Novartis, he had been targeted many times. On one occasion, the family tomb in Chur was desecrated and then the holiday home was set on fire.
escape to the USA
Following his departure, Vasella first fled to the United States and bought a cattle farm in Uruguay. Today he advises senior executives and holds nine directorships, including PepsiCo and American Express.
Things haven’t calmed down for him, though. Tax frauds were made public at the beginning of the year. The native of Grisons stated that he moved his living center from Risch to the tax haven Monaco between 2013 and 2015. The Zug tax authorities discovered it thanks to extensive research using, for example, water consumption and invoices for monthly Nespresso capsules.
Anyone who wants to can soon be neighbors with a man with an eventful past. But Vasella, which does not have direct access to the lake, has already occupied it.
