The pharmaceutical authority Swissmedic has approved an adapted corona vaccine from Moderna. The vaccine is said to work better than its predecessors against the currently circulating corona variants “Eris” and “Pirola”.
Testing of the new XBB.1.5 vaccine is being carried out as part of an internationally harmonized regulatory process to simplify the approval of new Covid-19 vaccines, Swissmedic announced on Thursday. This method has been created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and has been used for decades in the annual approval of adapted flu vaccines.
In the statement made by the pharmaceutical company, it was stated that Moderna welcomed the approval. Dan Staner, president of Moderna Switzerland, said the approval was important given the rising number of cases at the beginning of the autumn/winter period. The vaccine adapted from Moderna has already been approved by the United States, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Israel and Taiwan. (SDA)
