Freevee has now arrived on the streaming market. For film and series fans, there are always real gems to discover on Amazon’s service. The only downside: Since the streaming service is free, users should always be prepared for ad interruptions. On Freevee* you can now use “Under the Silver Lake“Stream a great mindfuck thriller that, according to FILMSTARTS author Stefan Geisler, is criminally underrated.
The mysterious neo-noir puzzle not only develops an eerie appeal that takes audiences deeper and deeper into the world of the rich and famous, but is also a deep nod to the work of director legend David Lynch and can also be compared to Marvel. Star Andrew Garfield (“Amazing Spider-Man”) scores in top form. If you want to watch the film without commercial interruptions, you can of course also use the DVD or Blu-ray version:
And that’s what “Under The Silver Lake” is about: 33-year-old Sam (Andrew Garfield) is stuck in life. Instead of looking for a job, the convinced slacker prefers to scan the area with his telescope, read comics and spy on the neighbors in front of everyone. But actually he has serious money problems, because the rent has not been paid for a while and he could be evicted.
One night, Sam discovers a mysterious young woman named Sarah (Riley Keough) in the apartment complex’s pool. He starts talking to her – but after another evening together in Sarah’s apartment, the beautiful stranger suddenly disappeared and her apartment was cleared out. The police do not help in the search and so Sam takes on the role of detective himself. He dives deeper and deeper into a rabbit hole of lies and myths. Is the problem bigger than he first thought?
A little Hitchcock, a little Lynch
Director David Robert Mitchell managed to generate international attention with his previous film ‘It Follows’. The unpleasant horror film about a sinister curse passed on through sexual intercourse has revived fears of the AIDS pandemic from the 1980s. Instead of loud jump scares, the filmmaker opted for a slowly developing atmosphere of terror.
‘Under The Silver Lake’ also starts slowly and feels like a strange mix of a slacker comedy and a Hitchcock thriller like ‘The Window to the Courtyard’. Only gradually does Sam descend deeper into the well of conspiracy theories and urban legends that slowly unfold before him in the shadows of the City of Angels:
What’s going on with the brutal dog killer who is wreaking havoc in the area? Are there hidden messages in the lyrics of the hipster hype band Jesus & The Brides Of Dracula? And what role does billionaire Jefferson Sevence (Chris Gann), who burned to death in his car along with some of his loved ones, play?

The episodic and confused narrative form of David Robert Mitchell’s “Under The Silver Lake” evokes memories of the mindfuck Los Angeles puzzle “Mulholland Drive – Street of Darkness”. In addition to the shared location, there is also an actor from the Lynch classic, Patrick Fischler, who appears opposite Andrew Garfield in ‘Under The Silver Lake’ in a small but impressive role.
So if you’re looking for a mysterious, spooky journey to Los Angeles that’s much more accessible than its role models thanks to the pop culture references and slacker humor that Andrew Garfield portrays beautifully, then you should definitely give “Under The Silver Lake.” a chance.
