Every season, reality TV shows, commonly known as trash TV, bring new dream ratings to their channels. So what is the secret of their success? What psychological needs of the audience do such formats meet and what functions do they perform in society? To do this, we talk to a media professor and a reality TV producer.
Christine Lötscher, professor of popular literature and media at the University of Zurich, sees behind the so-called superficial and trivial programs a complex examination of the social values and norms of our time. An example: “Social media pressure to be perfect – especially for young women – is so great that it creates a backlash of wanting to appear imperfect.”
Alexander Wenger, on the other hand, is a TV producer and producer. SRF, From right to left or Sat 1. In her overview talk, she shares a behind-the-scenes look at reality TV formats. On the question of how much of it is real and how much of it is staged in such formats, he says: “Every media product is created artificially somewhere; There are outages everywhere. This is how I explain reality TV: Real people with real emotions in an artificial environment” and also: “There are many ways to deal with your raw material. “One producer is turning it into a fun reality TV show, while the other is turning it into a serious docuseries.”
