According to the initiative, the apartments will be created by the City of Zurich Retirement Housing Foundation (SAW) and other non-profit housing developers.
The initiators explained their concerns by saying that the demand for affordable retirement apartments is too great. The ability of elderly people to find suitable apartments will also benefit young families who can move into empty family apartments.
In the short discussion held in the parliament on Wednesday evening, it remained undisputed that an additional retirement flat should be created at a rental fee.
Local councilor David Ondraschek (centre) said, among others, that it was “an absolutely necessary template”. “There are no arguments against this initiative,” said city councilor Andreas Hauri (GLP), who serves as foundation president at SAW.
Voters will have the final say on the “More pension offices for Zurich (Plus 2000)” initiative. The people of Zurich will decide at the ballot box whether the municipal regulations on the article “Non-profit housing” should be supported by the retirement housing paragraph required by the initiative.
