TV tip: A current science fiction milestone that you simply have to see!

When it was announced that there would be a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi masterpiece ‘Blade Runner’, most genre fans were probably shocked. After all, sequels are usually not only less good than the originals, but often also quite bad. And especially with real classics – and ‘Blade Runner’ is undoubtedly one of them – you often wonder whether that really has to be the case. Hand on heart: Blade Runner 2049‘by director Dennis Villeneuve (“Dune”) is the best proof that it is good to give sequels a chance!

By the way, ‘Blade Runner’ is not an invention of Ridley Scott or screenwriters David Webb Peoples and Hampton Fancher, but based on the science fiction novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ by the American writer Philip K. Dick. The work is also a true classic and a real cult book, which is still excellent to read today and has never really lost its relevance.

If you haven’t seen “Blade Runner 2049” yet, you definitely should – especially if you like science fiction films. You don’t even have to subscribe to a streaming service: “Blade Runner 2049” will air on free TV on NITRO.WOOD on September 13, 2023 at 8:15 PM. If you want to see the 1982 original, you can find it on Amazon Prime Video:

This is what “Blade Runner 2049” is all about

The year 2023 is when the production of replicants will finally be banned. The reason: Several serious incidents occurred during the production of the artificial humans bred in the space colonies. Only when industrialist Niander Wallaca (Jared Leto) develops the Nexus 9, an improved replicant, does production begin again in 2036.

Older, now banned models should now be eliminated. That is the job of the “Blade Runners”. The LAPD’s special forces, which also includes K (Ryan Gosling), must track down and eliminate the outdated models. But during his search, K stumbles upon a secret that not only has enormous explosive power, but also leads him to a former Blade Runner: Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who suddenly disappeared 30 years ago…

“Blade Runner 2049”: top or flop?

Critics and fans agree: “Blade Runner 2049” is a masterpiece. The editors of FILMSTARTS also love the dystopian work. How much do you read in the 5-star review, which is full of praise. And we are not the only ones, as evidenced by review sites such as or revealed.

But Villeneuve didn’t hit the box office with his 2017 film – on the contrary. From an economic perspective, ‘Blade Runner 2049’ can be considered a flop. The film only grossed $259 million internationally and that was on a blockbuster budget. But at the time, few people wanted to see the iconic original in theaters. The work is still a cult.

What’s next for “Blade Runner”?

In an interview with Villeneuve revealed that long after filming “Blade Runner 2049” he still dreamed of the film’s dark atmosphere and found it difficult to break away from this dystopian world. “If you ask me if I would like to revisit the Blade Runner universe in a brand new way, I can answer ‘yes,'” he revealed, but explained that he would not be making a new sequel. Villeneuve is thinking more of a completely new ‘detective noir story’, who knows, maybe we will one day see a ‘Blade Runner’ project from the master director.

A ‘Blade Runner’ series is currently being worked on. This will be stylistically based on Villeneuve’s film. If you want to know more about that, we recommend the following article:
