Heinz Spross built this apartment building in North Zurich for GC women. In addition to the seven apartments for the players, a caretaker also lives in one apartment in the house and supports the football players when necessary.

Two electric Smarts with the GC Women logo are parked in front of an apartment building on the outskirts of northern Zurich. Emanuela Pfister, 16, and Sydney Schertenleib, 16, have been living in a two-and-a-half-room apartment on the first floor for about a month. Sneakers and football boots in the stairwell show that the football players are at home here.

Everything is clean and orderly in the home of the two young people. “We did some cleaning beforehand,” Pfister said with a laugh during Blick’s visit. Everything still seems a bit impersonal in the fully furnished apartment.

Emanuela Pfister wants to add a few more plants to her apartment. The only green thing is a small aloe vera on the balcony. The bright living and dining area, including a dining area and kitchenette with modern appliances, is spacious and easy to clean. Both have enough space in their single bathroom with a shower. GC teens share large bedroom.

Surrogate family in GC house

Sydney Schertenleib moved from FCZ to GC for the new season. Although the two GC and Nati players did not know each other very well before, they got along well apart from the U17 European Championship they played together. They were both happy to be able to move into a GC flat together. They agree that having your own apartment is “great” and that it makes a lot of things easier.

Schertenleib studied high school in Zurich and lived with his family in Richterswil ZH. Emanuela has just started an internship at a nursery in Bülach and was at home with her family in Tuggen SZ. Thanks to the new place of residence, young football talents will waste less time traveling to training, school and work. “Our parents no longer have to drive us to and from training. After training in the evening, we can go home with our teammates and reach the campus in Niederhasli in just 25 minutes by electric scooter or train,” says Pfister.

Homesickness is sometimes a problem. The two miss their families and their own room. “GC is also almost like a family. “Everything is so familiar here,” say Emanuela Pfister and Sydney Schertenleib, nodding in agreement.

Increase the appeal of female footballers with free accommodation options

In a newly built apartment building in Zurich, all GC football players moved in as the first residents in six fully furnished apartments. The caretaker lives in another apartment and deals with the players’ concerns and supports them when necessary.

The new building for GC women’s football players was made possible by Heinz Spross, Chairman of the Board of the new GC Frauenfussball AG and sponsor of GC Women. This is GC’s next step towards the professionalization of the women’s team in the highest Swiss women’s league. “Apartments for female players allow us to improve the general terms and conditions of our female football players,” says long-time record-breaking national player and striker Lara Dickenmann. The end of his professional football career and economics education.

Wages in Swiss women’s football are still reasonable. “If we can now offer players free flats near campus, it will make us more attractive as a club. “This sets us apart from our competitors,” explains Dickenmann.

It is easier for players from abroad to integrate, and it also makes their job easier if they do not have to look for accommodation for young talents and experienced players from home and abroad in the dry housing market.

Dickenmann knows from his experience playing as a youth player in the United States and later abroad, including with Wolfsburg and Lyon, how beneficial it is for players from abroad and young footballers to live under the same roof and support each other. “We experienced this in Lyon. “It made a lot of things easier for me and I was able to focus on football better,” says Dickenmann. GC now hopes to have this positive effect on the players living in the new apartment building.

Sleep and relax instead of partying

Sydney Schertenleib and Emanuela Pfister are clearly focused on football. You are aiming for a professional career and hope to be in Inka Grings’ national team at the European Championship you host in 2025. Two young and ambitious football players have neither the time nor the desire to party.

They have training every day except Wednesday, and they also have matches on the weekends. The GC AWSL team even has two training sessions a day, two days a week. «We are tired when we come home in the evening and we need to be in shape again the next day. “We make sure we get enough sleep,” says Sydney, who has to study for exams.

More responsibilities and chores

After the initial enthusiasm about owning their own flat, young footballers also experienced some disappointment. “When you live alone, there is work, and that means taking on more responsibilities,” says Emanuela. Meals will not be prepared and served by parents in the evenings after the training. Now it’s time for Sydney and Emanuela to do their own shopping, laundry, cleaning and cooking.

“If something is missing, others in the house help us,” says Sydney. When cooking, they make sure to eat a balanced and healthy diet consisting of carbohydrates, meat, vegetables and fruits, and eat pasta before the matches. Emanuela: “But there is also fast food and pizza. We’re still young, so you can’t do everything perfectly all the time.”

There is no consensus on who can cook better. However, when it comes to their purposes; They want to make a living from football and hope to move abroad later. They are supported by GC on and off the field. Now her next goal is to play for the GC women’s NLA team and win championships with GC.
