In the fairy tale, Rumpelstiltskin knows how to turn straw into gold. Marlena Senne is not a legendary figure, but she has a very similar goal: She wants to turn stones into gold. Or at least silver or bronze.
EuroSkills kicked off yesterday in Gdansk, Poland for him and 16 other campaign mates on the SwissSkills National Team. Ideally, the 23-year-old player gets a medal on Saturday and makes the tale come true.
Marlena Senne’s EuroSkills debut
But above all, there is anxiety. “The day began in a way befitting a big event,” begins stonemason Marlena Senne from Affoltern am Albis ZH. Meaning: “I was angry. It’s a tough start.” But EuroSkills participants are preparing themselves heavily for it. Marlena Senne quickly adds: “I was able to calm down and get off to a good start at work.”
Your task this week: to work on stones, large and small. “Today I had to prepare for the big one, I was making templates out of sheet metal. In between I was allowed to emboss a smaller stone. And now I’m working on a bigger stone again,” says the Swiss champion of 2020.
He will find out how successful he is when the medals are distributed on Saturday evening. What EuroSkills already likes: “Talk to colleagues from other countries.”
Michael Bieri “guards” intensified
Michael Bieri also works for the SwissSkills National Team. He works with wood, not stone, like a carpenter. The 20-year-old from Süderen near Thun BE won the SwissSkills gold medal last year and looks calm: “I can ‘warm up’ with concentration”, starting to look back on day one. He sees himself on the right track, but how many of his competitors feel the same way?
The task he learned Wednesday morning was: “It’s about building a bar wall with struts, posts, and thresholds.” The difficulty is to find many wooden joints. “You have to be careful not to make any mistakes, or you’ll notice them when you get up.”
Since Bieri was not here as a tourist, he did not see Gdansk as a place. “See you Saturday,” he says. When the competitions are over, the jury decides who will receive the medals. He will then have a few hours to distract the SwissSkills National Team and look forward to the medal ceremony on Saturday evening.
There’s still a two-day rivalry between Marlena Senne and Michael Bieri to find out if stone and wood can turn into gold.
