The newly founded animation division of the American indie studio Annapurna recently celebrated a respectable success on Netflix with their first film “Nimona”. We now want to build on this with further projects. And what could be more obvious than using fabrics that are already in the Annapurna portfolio?
So got loud alongside a new project from Ice Age director Chris Wedge (about the first fish to land). announced an animated movie adaptation of the hit video game Straywhich the company launched with its video game division Annapurna Interactive 2022 and generated a lot of excitement.
This is Stray
Stray presents us with a dystopian world where humanity no longer seems to exist and which we experience from an unusual perspective, that of a stray cat. In the game, she finds herself in an isolated underground city populated by robots and tries to find a way to the surface with the help of a friendly drone.
“Stray” was eagerly awaited well in advance and not only delighted many gamers when it came out, but also won numerous renowned industry awards and landed on numerous annual best lists. More information about the game and why it’s worth it can be found on our website Sister site GamePro experience.
New movie genre for “Stray”?
The Stray movie is now being directed by Nimona co-director Nick Bruno. Whether the adaptation will simply reflect the game’s plot, be a sequel or prequel to it, or present us with another cat story set in the same post-apocalyptic world is unclear. Annapurna Animation boss Robert L. Baird simply stated that capturing the vibe of the template, which the developers like to call “hopepunk,” is a top priority.
What is meant by this is a story that presents us with a broken or dead society, but gives the whole thing a more hopeful touch with an emphasis on positive change. “It’s a game that revolves around what makes us human, and it doesn’t involve people at all,” Baird told of the gaming phenomenon . “It’s a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot with a really hilarious dynamic.”
When and where we will find out if this will also be transferred to the film version of ‘Stray’ is not yet certain, as the adaptation is still in a very early stage of development.
