Netflix reported 18.5 million views for its launch week of ‘A piece of“ for the internal anime adaptation. The series is in the internal top 10 of the streaming service in 93 countries. In 46, so almost exactly half, even in first place. That sounds very good at first. Yes, it’s a strong result. But as a comparison to other Netflix titles shows, the numbers are far from stellar – and especially from a last-place finish in the series’ all-time ranking.
To compare the numbers, it should be noted that Netflix changed the statistics for the measurement some time ago. It used to be simply announced how many hours of each title were watched; long series with many episodes, each with perhaps even longer runtimes, favored it. Now Netflix determines its ranking based on the so-called ‘Views’. However, the streaming service still does not indicate how many people have actually watched a series, but only divides the measured number of hours by the relevant duration of the season. This makes it possible to compare the current with historical figures.
“One Piece”: Far behind other Netflix hit series
And that is clear that ‘One Piece’ should lag behind hit series from the recent past. For example, “Queen Charlotte” started in May with about 24 million views based on the new metric — about a 30 percent increase in views. That’s quite a number – even though “Queen Charlotte” started on Thursday and “One Piece” was available on Wednesday and thus one day less in the starting week (the numbers are always measured from Monday to Sunday).
‘Queen Charlotte’ is an interesting point of comparison that we’ve chosen because it’s still a fairly recent series and the Netflix numbers shouldn’t have changed much since then. Above all, the spin-off “Bridgerton” currently ranks 10th in the Netflix all-time rankings. If ‘One Piece’ is to make it to the top 10, the series will have to make up a lot of ground in the coming weeks with a lot of positive word of mouth.
Of course, ‘One Piece’ is still a long way from becoming the most successful Netflix series of all time. “Wednesday” launched in November 2022 with about 43 million views converted to the new metric – more than twice as many as “One Piece”.
Even Adams Sandler’s Family Is Ahead of ‘One Piece’
A major advantage of the new statistics is that films and series can now be compared with each other. Because the previous advantage of series, of accumulating many more hours due to the significantly longer running time, was offset by the new metric.
It shows last week that “One Piece” even had to admit defeat for a current title. The Adam Sandler-produced comedy You’re So Not Invitationd to My Bat Mitzvah, starring his daughter Sunny Sandler (and supporting the rest of the Sandman family), grossed a whopping 21.9 million in its second week. views.

However, a limitation must be imposed here. “You’re Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah Like This” was available all week, gaining two more days of views compared to “One Piece”. It is very likely that “One Piece” would have crossed 21.9 million views in seven days. But it cannot be said with certainty.
