Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ has been part of the ‘1 billion film club’ since the beginning of August. In movie history, 53 movies have sold enough movie tickets to make more than a billion dollars.

“Barbie” currently ranks 18th, but will likely slide even further up. The movie, compared to all the others on the list, is still in theaters. To date, “Barbie” has grossed $1.34 billion worldwide at the box office.

The only other movie to cross the $1 billion mark this year is The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The animated film, which tells the adventures of Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach, was released in cinemas in April.

The 5 most successful films in history are:

  1. “Avatars” (2009)
  2. “Avengers: Endgame” (2019)
  3. «Avatar: The Way of Water» (2022)
  4. “Titanic” (1997)
  5. «Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens» (2015)

All these films have grossed more than two billion dollars. Avengers: Infinity War has also grossed over $2 billion.

The income is calculated on the basis of the number of tickets sold, so adjusted for inflation.

It is also worth noting that some of the mentioned movies have been released multiple times and the revenue comes from all releases. For example: “Avatar”, “The Dark Knight”, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” and “Jurassic Park”.

All the blockbusters mentioned had a very high budget. However, only the production budget is considered here. Money spent on marketing and distribution is not taken into account as it is often not made public.

The highest budget had:

  1. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”: $379 million
  2. “Avengers: Endgame”: $356 million
  3. “Avatar: The Way of Water”: $350 million

“Joker” got by on the smallest budget ($55 million).
