The series is narrated by Erin Carter (played by Evin Ahmad). She moved to Spain from England and works as a teacher in Barcelona, where she spends happy days with her daughter Harper (Indica Watson) and her husband Jordi (Sean Teale).
However, her peaceful life is thrown off balance after she and her daughter are involved in an armed robbery of a supermarket. While trying to protect her child, Erin accidentally kills one of the robbers.
An event that sheds light on the obviously violent young woman and reveals her mysterious past.
The series is somewhere between thriller and action series, two genres that are especially popular on the streaming platform. Behind it are Left Bank Pictures, the same studio behind hit series The Crown, and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, better known as the woman behind another huge Netflix hit, The Witcher.
It’s hard not to think about all the action movies of the last thirty years while watching, though, as the subject of double life has come up so often. “Who is Erin Carter?” is the story of a violent protagonist in search of a new life and redemption, but her past continues to haunt her. This past, of course, comes to light in the course of the episodes and through a large number of deaths.
As is often the case with action series, suspense is achieved at all costs through the use of grand storylines, making the series breathless but hardly subtle. Even the most demanding spectators are left behind. A quirk that is quite common in Spanish productions, but which often pays off by becoming popular successes, as evidenced by the huge Netflix success ‘Money Heist’.
Nevertheless, thanks to the talent of actress Elvin Ahmad, the series breaks out of the tough heroine clichés. Unlike “Agent Stone,” starring Gal Gadot, which was released on the platform a few weeks ago, Erin Carter at least has the guts to break the rules.
Who is Erin Carter really? A woman troubled by her past, whose flaws and empathy save her from an action corset dominated by interchangeable super spies and fellow superheroes. With a believable human character, mystery, and vintage action style, Netflix delivers a show that has enough sugar to be addictive and a hit.
