According to wine statistics, grapes were planted in an area the size of approximately 20,500 football fields in Switzerland in 2022. Although the cantons of Valais, Vaud, Geneva and Ticino still grow the most vineyards, the smaller cantons should not be wiped out.
The size of the vineyard area depends not only on the area of a canton, but also on the viticulture potential provided by the soil and weather conditions. We will show you in which cantons you can find the fewest vineyards and introduce you to the leading wineries of these cantons.
Nidwalden, Obwalden, Uri and Zug
In 2022, only 12.46 hectares of land were registered as vineyards in these four cantons. Yet this small wine-growing region in Central Switzerland manages to produce exceptional wines. Weingut zum Rosenberg at Altdorf UR and Weingut Tellen at Kägiswil OW deserve special attention. Both companies rely on the cultivation of fungi-resistant grape varieties.
city of Basel
In 2022, a manageable area of 4.75 hectares in the canton of Basel Stadt was registered as a vineyard. Focusing on the pressing of high-quality wines, the Riehen winery does most of this, with an area of approximately 3.6 hectares. At Blick’s massive Chardonnay tasting, the 2019 Le Grand took the sensational title and eclipsed a variety of world-class Chardonnays.
Appenzell
In the two cantons of Appenzell, Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden, not everything revolves around cheese. Did you know that Welti Weine has created a Malbec from Appenzell Ausserrhoden Wienacht-Tobel in the bottle? Befitting a mountainous region, some of the 4.5-hectare Appenzell vineyards are over 600 meters above sea level.
Glarus
The canton of Glarus has the smallest vineyard area with an area of 1.9 hectares. Despite its modest size, at least one winery has made a name for itself in Glarus. For example, the Bürglirain Foundation, which planted the historic Bürgli vineyard with, among other things, Riesling, Sylvaner and Pinot Noir grapes.
