The golden season is especially beautiful in the mountains. In the Aletsch Arena UNESCO World Heritage site, the yellow Swiss pine pines, 20 kilometers of glacier and majestic mountain peaks in the Aletsch Forest provide the perfect backdrop for an eventful excursion. Our overview tells you what you can experience in this special episode of Valais:
one
Top four views of the glacier
The view of the largest glacier in the Alps is breathtaking. The Great Aletsch Glacier is a veritable ice giant, weighing 10 billion tons, 800 meters deep at its thickest point, and measuring 79 square kilometers, only slightly less than the area of the city of Zurich. The glacier is best viewed from four vantage points: Hohfluh, Moosfluh, Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn. A nature scene framed by 40 4,000 photographs that seem close enough to touch in autumn thanks to its sharp landscape.

great rope walk
If you’re doing well on foot, of course, you can hike to all four viewpoints. The Bettmerhorn (2647 m) and Eggishorn (2869 m) can also be ideally combined on the Unesco high-altitude course. The glacier is always in sight on this 3-hour tour! But be careful: The partially exposed ridge road provides some excitement for 1.5 kilometers. Although it is always well secured, you need to be confident on this route and not be afraid of heights. Aletsch Arena has a total of 300 kilometers of walking paths. Hint: On the route from Fiescheralp to the edge of the glacier, you will be closer to the «Ice Giant» than anywhere else in the entire trail network.

Experience the big ice up close
You are not allowed to enter the glaciers alone. But there is an opportunity to experience the endless ice up close on a guided glacier tour. One of these hikes starts from Moosfluh and goes over “Katzenlöcher” to the edge of the glacier. During two hours on the ice – always tied to a rope – the mountain guide will tell you exciting things about the Arctic Ocean. Two-day tours are also possible. You can spend the night in the famous Konkordiahütte. And as a souvenir you can bring the unforgettable feeling of the Aletsch Glacier back to everyday life.

Five adrenaline rushes in six days
Adventures continue in Aletsch Arena. Five suspension bridges promise a real adrenaline rush: Belalp-Riederalp (124 meters long), Aspi-Titter (160 m), Goms Bridge (280 m), Massegga Bridge (40 m) and Bodmer Bridge (37 m). Architectural marvels stretch over deep gorges up to 120 meters above the ground. Meanwhile, on the six-day Aletsch-Goms suspension bridge tour, an enchanting fall vacation experience, you can hit all five adrenaline rushes in one go. If you’re not keen on heights, locals have a few tricks to cross bridges.
5
Sporty sporty!
Those who prefer to explore the area on two wheels rather than on foot will find numerous mountain bike trails at the Aletsch Arena. The Stoneman Glaciara Cycle is particularly challenging: 4,700 meters altitude and 127 kilometers await you on this three-day tour, where the Moosfluh viewpoint stands out. There are also many other mountain bike trails suitable for all levels. Golfers, on the other hand, can improve their handicaps in Riederalp, Europe’s highest 9-hole golf course.
6
forest power station
If you like to be quieter, you can have a great closure in the Aletsch area. This can be done in an idyllic way, for example, with a forest bath in the Aletsch Forest in autumn. A walk in the area of 1,000-year-old stone pines, which has been under protection for 90 years, is an experience that appeals to the senses, relieves stress and lowers blood pressure. With some luck, you can also spot various animals such as red deer, chamois, black grouse or golden eagle, or the pygmy owl, Europe’s lovable smallest owl. Located in Villa Cassel above Riederalp, Pro Natura Center Aletsch offers interesting facts about flora and fauna.
7
living sustainability
The Great Aletsch Glacier is retreating rapidly due to climate change. The new Moosfluh geological hiking trail very impressively demonstrates its effects on the mountain ridge. On the informative circular route, guests are informed about the uniqueness of the glacial landscape and the entire Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch Unesco World Heritage Site. Those who vacation here should be able to experience nature in all its beauty at the Aletsch Arena, but should also be interested in it. Sustainability is also practiced at the Aletsch Arena in the car-free mountain villages of Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp, and the mountain railways in the resort area run on renewable energies from local sources.
